Heads Up If Going Through Illinois

Our wonderful new Governor yesterday raised the State Fuel Tax by double. Went from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon. Bought gas across the Mississippi River in Missouri this morning for 29 cents a gallon less than Illinois stations. The young lady behind the counter said they have been selling gas like crazy......never been so busy.............wonder why?
Won't even mention the other crazy stuff he's been pulling.
Seriously considering moving to Missouri

I don't like high taxes either, but Il hasn't raised the gas tax since 1990...29 years. I spend the summers in Il with my kids.

Supposedly for "road improvement" But you can bet it will be spent in the Chicago area. Misappropriation of tax money in Illinois is as common as hot dogs on the 4th of July.
Fuel Tax in Missouri is now 21 cents per gallon cheaper than IL but yet they have better roads.
The new Gov. also doubled the yearly vehicle registration fees. He is soon to enact a $15.00 per hr min. wage. He doesn't realize that people on Social Security, fixed incomes don't get adjustments to meet the increase in taxes and cost of living.
He is killing manufacturing and small business. We already had a major employer here close their plant that had been here for over 50 years and built a huge brand new plant in Missouri 18 miles away.
He legalized full term abortions, legalized marijuana, made us a "Sanctuary State", Cook County Jail (Chicago) is now a voting place............inmates included, doubled fuel tax, doubled vehicle registration fee.
Anybody need a "slightly used" Gov?

Sounds very similar to California. Hmmm, I wonder what they have in common.

Sorry.....but you're wrong. The 1975 partial birth abortion ban was repealed by the "Reproductive Health Act"

Our new governor says we need to raise the gas tax by 45 cents a gallon over 3 years to fix the roads. Lucky for us it has to be put to a vote she can't just say it starts today. And polling shows that will never happen, over 70% said find another way to fix the roads

Wow this thread went sideways, upside down etc If you lived in this "State" of disaster though you would understand the need to vent

Trying to save people going through Illinois a head's up to fuel ahead of time.
The worst place to fuel will be the Chicago area........the gas prices are even more inflated there.
Chicago price is aprox $3.00 per gal.
West Central IL where I live is $2.79 per gal.
1/2 mile across the Mississippi River in Missouri is $2.42 per gal.
Makes sense doesn't it????
The gas stations here: the pump lanes are empty. Across the river the stations are busier than ever.

One good thing though is one of our State Reps. has a petition going to turn IL into two States.

I never understood why it's a "per gallon" tax instead of the usual sales tax percentage number. At times it seems the government is trying to deceive us about the actual costs for fuel by burying the tax in the price at the pump.

If at 28 cents/gallon and the gas is $3/gallon ($2.72 before tax), then that's about a 10.5 percent sales tax. Is that unreasonable considering the other sales taxes in your state? Don't know, but I do know we (USA) still have some of the cheapest gas prices vs MOST of the other countries in the world.

In all actuality what was meant to create more tax might do the opposite. This morning I filled up across the river in Missouri. On the way I passed 5 large Illinois stations in town. One car at a pump at one of the 5 stations. At the Missouri Station at 5:45 AM there were 13 plus cars along with two semi's filling up. This is just the first station across the river, there are at least five other stations on the Missouri strip. The Missouri station was 39 cents per gallon cheaper than Illinois. Missouri cigarettes are $2.00 per pack cheaper since our new Gov. tacked on a extra $1.00 per pack tax.
I asked the clerk if they have noticed a increase in business...........she said they have been swamped. She said their commercial accounts has taken a huge jump.
So instead of Illinois getting the fuel tax, sales tax on cigs, soda's etc etc etc Missouri is now getting it. The city sales tax in sales is lost to the Missouri County across the river.

Guess if you lived on Social Security or a small retirement it would make a difference to you also.
For many the only way they can afford to RV is to watch the pennies which adds up to dollars.

This morning the difference between gas in town and across the river in Missouri was thirty eight cents per gal. Missouri price compared to Chicago average: Fifty Eight cents per gal. That is pretty significant.

I think you would have to take into account that wages in California is much higher than Illinois.

What has many Illinoisans upset is that all these changes were put in effect by him signing a bill or by legislative action. None by ballot for the general population to decide.

Of course it is your choice to travel where tax is high. For us here in Illinois having taxes doubled was not our choice but something we have to live with daily.
Hope you never live where your taxes and registration fee's can be doubled without your vote.
