Traveling north from Amarillo into southeast Colorado, on 287/385, the highway in the Oklahoma panhandle is the worst, terrible bumpy 41 miles of travel. It's not too busy but it'll shake your fillings out.

Orlando is bad, lots of traffic, lots of slow downs, lots of extremely rude and deadly drivers on the road... but it is still a walk in the park when compared to Cincinnati or Atlanta.

I hate San Antonio more than I hate Dallas though...

My take and I live just about 99 miles north of cin / is that long before there were interstates which I believe fdr started people drove state routes. I.e. 127. 27. 66 etc. I plan on running these routes to avoid the morons on 75 etc. less stress. Will take me longer but camping is supposed to relive stress. Not add too. Just my 2 cents.

No city driving is fun. But the worst I've seen is the PA turnpike. I had a Class A with tailpipes about 7" wide on both side. I swear I lost about a inch length on both sides going through their roadwork barriers. The one I went through must of been 12 miles or longer. I swear it was not much wider than the rv.. I don't know about white knuckles, I was soaking wet from sweating by the time I got through that mess.

Yeah. Wikipedia says 1956- Eisenhower.

That concludes our picayune trivia lesson for the day.

Back to our regularly scheduled gripe sesson.

There currently is not a lot of road construction going on in NE Illinois, but traveling through NE Illinois is never pleasant.

I remember going through Columbus several years and had a similar experience. You can't win--If you try to slow down and be safe tractor trailers will start passing you. My trailer is just a little guy but it's very wide; I'm scared to take my eyes off the road long enough to check and see how close the trailer is to the concrete barrier.

I'm sure that road construction contractors are required to maintain a certain lane width through their work zones. Perhaps Ohio (and others) don't enforce this or their their width requirements are unreasonably narrow.

For me it is Connecticut and the 495 around Washington DC. Also parts of New Jersey and New York.

I am with Norty1. Washington DC. I no longer travel there unless it is between midnight and 4:00 am.

Secondly, Wilmington NC because I folded in the rear of an Altima last year because he had a shorter stopping distance than I did. If not for the bad memory, Wilmington seems nice otherwise.

I particular hate I-70 through western Kansas and eastern Colorado....especially when the wind is blowing and by gawd I've never been through there when it ain't blowing. Drove an 18 wheeler through there many times in my 2 years driving OTR and trust me, you haven't experienced pucker power until you feel your whole rig tipping upward on one side of your wheels..........beyond that, just about any metropolitan area.....they all vacuum.

I live on long island and I can tell you that it is not fun getting off the island. We don't really camp on the island either so every time we go, it is over the throgs neck. I can see how someone not from here may get stressed because it is very stressful. I have been doing it for so long that it is not so bad anymore but I do dread it. Actually Cross Bronx Expressway is the bad part.

ATLANTA ... I-85 or I-285, doesn't matter, they both kill my nerves. I sat in traffic on I85 near La Grange for 3 hours moving only 1 mile during that 3 hour stall.

Yes you can take a ferry. There are actually 2 of them. One is all the way at the end and another one, for arguments sake, half way through. They both travel across the sound to Connecticut. With that being said, it is expensive. They charge per vehicle, passenger and per foot for trailer. It would cost almost $250 for me and the family one way. It is an hour ride, I think, not including loading and unloading. I have never done it myself, I prefer to "drive around" as we say.

Gary or

South Bend by nightfall. Then sneak through Chicago early sunday morning.
