Question Is it OK to run A/C all night in campground?

Hi everyone,

We've been camping for years and years. When we moved to the East Coast 20 years ago, we avoided camping when the weather would be too hot and humid - for personal comfort reasons: no A/C. we finally sold our old Coleman pop-up with no A/C and are now proud owners of a 2014 X17Z hybrid. We love it, and we've used it a few times already, but, again, when the weather was moderate and cool. Now we want to go during the humid season. We're wondering what the noise rules are regarding running A/C in a state (Maryland, VA, WVA) or National campground. We ran it yesterday at home and walked around to see how loud it is; surprisingly, once you're 10 or more feet away, it's pretty quiet. But just because we think it's quiet doesn't mean everyone else will!

We've seen lots of folks talk about quiet times, and only running generators between certain hours. But is that also true about A/C? We do not have a generator so we would be at a site with electrical hook-up to run the A/C. What are your experiences about this? Can someone help us understand before we take the plunge?

Thanks!

Always been a state park camper, and never had issues with AC noise disturbing other folks. We do run AC all night in the summer when necessary. You should be fine doing so.

I don't see AC noise as an issue. Its way up on the roof. If you camp with animals, it has to be on 24/7 in hot weather. I can't imagine anybody complaining about it. Never really thought about it and probably never will again. If its hot, its on...

Bill & Sue,

In my experience the "quiet time" rules refer to 3 things
1) generator use in certain parks
2) loud neighbors AND lastly
3) my snoring (according to my dw) JK!!

Seriously, running your AC in a campground with electric hookup would be no problem based on my experiences.

Go camping and be !!

Bill and Sue there are far greater things to be concerned about than running a A/C unit during quiet time.
To answer your question yes run it you will be fine.

I don't think my wife would camp if we could not run the AC's at night. You can hang meat in our camper and the poor little dog has to sleep under the covers.

Thanks everyone!

Thank you for your helpful information and for sharing your experiences. Never having been at a campground when it was hot and muggy, I had no idea what goes on all night! I'm glad to hear this is one issue I needn't worry about. Now I just need to find a state campground with electric hook-up that isn't fully booked up over a weekend!

If a campground doesn't have electrical hookups and has a generator noise ordinance, then I don't go there.

Exact opposite for me. If there is no electric, then that usually means we are campin in the mountains or on the river. No electric, no genny, no worries.
Bill and Sue, not sure how far you want to travel, but Shenandoah River State Park is very nice. Also, I have heard Lake Anna State Park is very nice. We made our reservations there for August a few weeks ago and there were plenty sites available. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendations, Howie. I've heard of Lake Anna State Park; but we haven't been there yet. I'll take a look at Shenandoah River State Park, too.
