Question Is it OK to run A/C all night in campground?

Hi everyone,

We've been camping for years and years. When we moved to the East Coast 20 years ago, we avoided camping when the weather would be too hot and humid - for personal comfort reasons: no A/C. we finally sold our old Coleman pop-up with no A/C and are now proud owners of a 2014 X17Z hybrid. We love it, and we've used it a few times already, but, again, when the weather was moderate and cool. Now we want to go during the humid season. We're wondering what the noise rules are regarding running A/C in a state (Maryland, VA, WVA) or National campground. We ran it yesterday at home and walked around to see how loud it is; surprisingly, once you're 10 or more feet away, it's pretty quiet. But just because we think it's quiet doesn't mean everyone else will!

We've seen lots of folks talk about quiet times, and only running generators between certain hours. But is that also true about A/C? We do not have a generator so we would be at a site with electrical hook-up to run the A/C. What are your experiences about this? Can someone help us understand before we take the plunge?

Thanks!

Always been a state park camper, and never had issues with AC noise disturbing other folks. We do run AC all night in the summer when necessary. You should be fine doing so.

I don't see AC noise as an issue. Its way up on the roof. If you camp with animals, it has to be on 24/7 in hot weather. I can't imagine anybody complaining about it. Never really thought about it and probably never will again. If its hot, its on...

Bill & Sue,

In my experience the "quiet time" rules refer to 3 things
1) generator use in certain parks
2) loud neighbors AND lastly
3) my snoring (according to my dw) JK!!

Seriously, running your AC in a campground with electric hookup would be no problem based on my experiences.

Go camping and be !!

Bill and Sue there are far greater things to be concerned about than running a A/C unit during quiet time.
To answer your question yes run it you will be fine.

I don't think my wife would camp if we could not run the AC's at night. You can hang meat in our camper and the poor little dog has to sleep under the covers.

Thanks everyone!

Thank you for your helpful information and for sharing your experiences. Never having been at a campground when it was hot and muggy, I had no idea what goes on all night! I'm glad to hear this is one issue I needn't worry about. Now I just need to find a state campground with electric hook-up that isn't fully booked up over a weekend!

If a campground doesn't have electrical hookups and has a generator noise ordinance, then I don't go there.

Exact opposite for me. If there is no electric, then that usually means we are campin in the mountains or on the river. No electric, no genny, no worries.
Bill and Sue, not sure how far you want to travel, but Shenandoah River State Park is very nice. Also, I have heard Lake Anna State Park is very nice. We made our reservations there for August a few weeks ago and there were plenty sites available. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendations, Howie. I've heard of Lake Anna State Park; but we haven't been there yet. I'll take a look at Shenandoah River State Park, too.

One of my most favorite camping spot in this vicinity is the Sherando Lake Recreation Area... Has a great Lake, facilities, tent camping, and electric sites...

A GREAT get-away place for sure...

A/C is exempt from quiet time rules unless it has a bad bearing that is screaming or something. If that was the case, you'd have a hard time sleeping not just those around you.

I can speak to the WV State Campgrounds and State Forest areas, AC running all day and night is not a problem. Camped at Watoga State Park this past week and went down to Seneca State Forest, both I would highly recommend! Many of the State Parks here in WV, AC is not really needed with the exception of the heat of the day from say noon - 4pm at certain parks.

Never been in a park w/Ac that did not allow it. Have been in some that chart extra for ac use.

As a long time Maryland resident I cannot imagine a summer night without ac. But the others are right. Set the thermostat to 45 and snooze away!

If you can provide the area(s) you would like to camp at, someone might be able to provide a recommendation. If you live north of Baltimore, even state parks in PA like Codorus State Park near Hanover, PA (which has electric sites) are reachable in about an hour.

Warning! If your intended weekend is that of July 4th, reserving a site anywhere will be a matter of luck being a holiday weekend. Even the weekend before (June 28-29) may be hard to reserve as the week of June 30th - July 4th is the most popular vacation week of the year!

I think the reason for no generators after quiet time is that some are really noisy. It is easier to enforce a no generator rule and include all than to argue with someone that thinks theirs is ok.

If it's hot we run our AC all night or until it shuts itself off.

I definitely run my a/c's all night, but then I'm on shorepower. My next lot neighbor isn't using his a/c in his motor home at all. I can not imagine being on the Florida Gulf Coast this time of year and not using a/c. I am a host here and am outside most days, but at night I want a/c. Even temps in the high 70's at night with 100% humidity isn't comfortable to me.

Thank you for pointing out Cordus State Park. I wasn't familiar with it. And it looks very interesting!

Actually, though, I meant my comment about needing to find a place... in a more general sense, not specifically this or the next weekend. In the past (before we had A/C) when the weather forecast looked promising, I looked at nearby campgrounds (within 2-3 hours) and everything was already taken!
