KOA Campgrounds

We bought a KOA membership this year. We've already been to one KOA campsite and will go to our second this weekend.

Which KOA Campgrounds have you been to?

Which were your favourite and are there any you wouldn't go back to?

Our local KOA isn't really impressive. We've been through a few times, but never really enjoyed it. Its small (which makes it appeared crowded) and I'm personally not fond of the 30+ year-old-buried-in-the-mud seasonal campers that appear to be abandoned there.
On a lighter note, the KOA in Needles CA. is desert camping at its finest. And the KOA in Joplin was pleasent as well.

You will get a wide variety at KOA's. I would check any cg with this site: http://www.campgroundreviews.com/

Sometimes you can get a feel for the place by reading the reviews and tossing out the highs and lows. Some people have a bad experience and just flame them but overall I have found the reviews pretty accurate.

I became a member when we attended the NASCAR Coke 300 in July 3 years ago.
We stayed here because we could walk to Daytona Track. It is located right next to the Daytona Flee Market which was fun to visit. They did not have a pool, which we knew in advance and the bathrooms were clean but small. If we go bak to the races, we ill pick a campground with a pool and shuttle to the track.
Other we have stayed at since we became menbers:
Mystic CT
Middleboro/Cape Cod in Middleboro
East Hampton Western Ma
This summer we are headed to Acadia, Maine and will be staying at the KOA.
I would return to all the campgrounds listed in MA, Ct. Will let you know how the Acadia KOA measures up.
I really like the patio sites that the Middleboro and the Mystic KOA have, but I am waiting for a special occasion to fork over $80 for a site!
So far this season we have booked 6 campground, but only one will be a KOA (Acadia).

We stayed at the Bar Harbour KOA a few years ago. Nice experience, They have another KOA just down the road. Never heard of the Acadia one.

You are correct, it is the Bar Harbor KOA. We are staying there while visiting Acadia National Park.

We stayed in some KOA's back in the early 90's with a tent and paid $25 a night. Pretty expensive back then. Had a chance to buy into a membership cg with yearly fee's locked at $120 a year. We pay $2 a night to stay at other membership cg's around the country when we travel (currenly at $10 a night). Even in Las Vegas last week, we chose to stay in the membership campground with grass and maintained pool/grounds for free (we get 50 nights free after paying the equivalent $10 a night for a yearly fee vs the $50 a night KOA wanted for a very large blacktop parking lot in Vegas. Sorry, I've always avoided KOA because of their high prices over the years.

There are 2 there. One on the right just after the bridge, the 2nd is just up the road on the left. We stayed in the one on the back bay. Pricey as usual but it was a special week. Live music, movies for the kids etc.

Healthi,
Sounds like you got a good deal on a membership. Kathy and I looked into joining a membership CG that is local to us, and connected to others around NA. They wanted $5,000 up front to join for a 7 year period, plus $600 annual fee. Typically we have spent $40 per night, and with our short summer season, even a busy year works out to $800 per season. For us the membership was not worth it. If we went south for the winter months, we would get more out of a membership. It would be nice to have that amount of freedom to roam.

We bought ours for $800 from an older man who crashed his mh into a ditch. His wife was still in the hospital when he signed the contract over to us. This was 1992ish. OUr fee's were frozen at $120 a year and still pay just that. We can camp as much as we want to at that camp for free up to two weeks at a time. But! we don't live near there. We bought it just so we could use the reciprocal cg's across the US. When we stopped camping for a few years, we kept the membership up. Glad we did as we returned to camping/traveling with a vengeance. Although we pay $60 a year to use the reciprocal cg's, we only pay $10 a night. It paid itself off in the first two years we had it. We can sell it now for $3000, so it turned out a win-win for us.

Membership cg's really only work out if you are able to use them enough

we love the newburgh ny city north koa. though it is getting too expensive to go frequently we still love this place. Its close to home, so we save money on gas, and alway have a good time, kids love it, its clean and safe. We have stayed in twin grove/pine grove KOA in PA..campground was clean as a whistle, and pool was beautiful staff were fantastic, and even had a small "canival" attatched, complete with ferris wheel etc, small extra fee for the "carnival" but worth it..only problem there was that the name IMPLIED they had trees. The few trees they had resembled cell towers and you could not tell where you site started and the road ended..was like a big gravel pit. we had to hang Beach towels around the awning and easy up to be out of the constant sun.

Great KOA

We really enjoyed the great KOA in Durant,Okla. It is new, clean, and the staff are most helpful. It is next to Choctaw Casino with free shuttle service. We live in Texas, but have been several times and looking foward to going again this week-end. (Chris and Beverly)

They have always been expensive. But they do have some nice amenities usually a pool, game room, shop etc.
We stayed at several when I was a kid, all over the county, some great some not so great.
My dad used to BLOW up when he found out he had paid the high site fee then they had pay toilets and showers as well!!
As kids we didn't care about that!! They had a pool and pool table and ice cream on site!! Crawl under the doors, rig the showers...

We have reservations for our trip August and had to change our plans due to the Government shutdown in Minnesota, state parks closed. We are going to a Fed park on different dates.
We will be staying at North Maple north of Minneapolis. Let you know how it was!

I also remember staying in KOA's as a kid back in 69 with my folks..traveled from NY to AZ in a pop up camper...still not sure how they did that with 3 kids but we did it, I remember going into KOA's and it always seemed they were in the middle of a cornfield. thats about all i recall, but I was only 5.

Have stayed at the KOA Virginia Beach. You can ride your bikes to the beach on a trail or the shuttlebus (small fee) comes to the campground to pick you up for the beach. They have a jumping pillow, 2 pools, putt-putt.

Also KOA Harpers Ferry WV they also have a jumping pillow which the kids loved, pool onsite putt-putt gameroom.
Koa is a little expensive but we had a fun time.

We are finding that the KOA's are actually cheaper than the Provincial Parks in Ontario so that's why we've been going to them. I guess like any other campground, we've found that some are really nice and some are just ok.

Stayed at the KOA in Maple Grove Minnesota, northwest of Minneapolis.
The staff was super nice! Easy to get to, nice stores close.
The park could use some updates, the pool deck needed to be replaced, the shower house was serviceable but dated.

I know times are "tough" the place was full, people coming and going, a few passers through, like us, but most seemed local.
Spend a little $$ and get more people!
