We always do these 6 months ahead. I just searched for a couple of dates in July and found there are none available. We usually went in June but did not realize it matters that much.

Another campground that is south of Platte River might be Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee.

Thanks I'll look at it.

Last time we got into Platte River was back in 04. Back then they only reserved a few sites. We got up there on a Sat. spent the night in another campground and was 1st in line on Sunday.

For a State Park on the Wisconsin side, Point Beach is a unknown secret (until now). The sites are large and is one of the few State Park Campgrounds that has water and electric. It's located near Kewaunee (2 hours north of Milwaukee) right on the lake. Tour the nuclear powerplant while you're there.

Click the View Availability on Map button. Any available site will be in Green

Good luck getting into Ludington. I've been trying for years.

I figured it out, both how to view availability and getting into a popular state park CG is virtually impossible!! I had to book a private CG near Sleeping Bear Dunes & the 6 mos window hasn't opened up for Ludington, but I imagine I'll have to do the same!! If anyone has any good suggestions near Lake Michigan, I'm open. We're starting up at Sleeping Bear Dunes and working our way down back to Ohio.

It actually HAS availability. What's up with that?! I have that down as a possibility as well as Muskegon, which has been booked solid. Michigan looks like the place to be!

We have all of our reservations until August 11th and will be making the final ones in the next two weeks. As soon as school is back in we no longer need the reservations. There then is open sites.

Starting Labor Day is the most pretty camping around. Great color and cool nights with very few bugs. All around great.

Good luck in finding sites where you want.

Most parks do keep a few, not many, walk-up sites, that do not get picked for the reservation system.

It's not on Lake Michigan but my favorite state campground in MI is Otsego Lake State Park.

I gave up on Ludington and got a big site in Muskegon Channel CG. I hope it's possible to take a day trip to Ludington. I feel like a giddy little school girl that just got invited to the prom! I very excited and looking forward to August.

When you take your day trip to Ludington be sure to walk the beach out to the lighthouse and climb on a clear day. Great view and nice walk along the beach.

Glad to hear it. Where did you get? We like both loop 1 and 3.

The trails are nice to hike and you can go north a couple of miles and find dog friendly beaches.

Cherry Bowl drive in is very close and an experience for the kids.

Loop 1!! Downside: Had to book 2 sites with 2nts each, but both in loop 1. Upside: two different views & they definitely weren't there when I originally looked, otherwise would of snatched them up then. I'm now contemplating Orchard Beach State Park instead of Muskegon b/c we'd like to be closer to Ludington. Does anyone recommend one over the other?

Pretty good isolation on that loop. Easy access to most of them.

I do like Orchard Beach and was there twice last year. The beach is down many steps from the campground but still great views of the lake.

I ended up booking Orchard Beach & got a great spot in first row. Don't know how that happened! I kept checking to see if there were any drawbacks with the site (i.e. holds water, dirt spot, sloping), but nothing! I like that it's very close to Ludington and still on our "way back" home.
