We did the Oregon to Yellowstone trip, so I can't really give much on what's East of Yellowstone. I seem to recall the Dakota's being FLAT and boring. Stick to the Interstate for fuel/cell service if you can. You break down on a back road and it could be hours before you get help.
I will suggest a few South Dakota sites.
* Black Hills
* Needles Highway
* Sturgis if you like Harley Davidson
* Badlands National Park is supposed to be cool
* Mount Rushmore
* Custer State Park
* Wall drug store (mall)
Wyoming:
* Devil's Tower
* Anywhere in Yellowstone
* Grand Tetons
* Jackson (hole)
Note: Yellowstone is HUGE. It takes days to see everything - longer if you want to enjoy it. Plan in advance if you can as park sites go fast. Don't forget your BEAR SPRAY.
