When we had out popup we stayed at the KOA in Rodanthe on the OBX and really enjoyed it. They have a nice web site with lot's of pictures if you would like to look. They are also dog friendly, which is a plus for us.

Pick your weather carefully. A north east wind means constant salt spray for those on the beach sites. We always ask for "buffer" areas for north and north east winds. You will still be at the beach but not in the salt spray....my personal opinion

Emerald Isle NC Holiday campground has sites within 25 steps of the ocean. A little pricy but a very nice place.

We have camped at ocean waves twice on the outer banks, 11 hour drive from our house in Florida and love it, it is down the road from camp hatteras, much smaller, but a good price per night. All the regulars book in January, on the drive this summer, we were debating if it was worth the drive, and after a day, we were trying to figure out if we could go next summer. Waves/Rodanthe area so much nicer than touristy Nags Head
