Need Colorado Campground Suggestions (Denver - Durango)

Ok all you Colorado camping pros!!! This years camping expedition will take us from Florida to Colorado in late spring. We need your recommendations for a stay in the Denver area (visiting our daughter) and then down to the Durango area. We are looking for recommendations on any National Parks, State Parks or Corp of Eng camp grounds that are in these areas. We would also like to do some dry-camping.
Thanks
Don

Welcome to Colorado

Hi

Cherry Creak State Park, is a great spot to camp while in Denver. It's a little spot of heaven in the middle of everything.

Rocky Mountain National Park, is a must do. Its just Northwest of Denver

Great Sand Dunes National Park, South and a little West of Denver

You can make reservations on line for these, And get a good Colorado State Map, Free dry camping in the forest everywhere, on BLM land. and campsites with hookups in the national forest, also some primative camping, for small fees. You can make reservations on line for some of the National Forest Campgrounds.
I came to Colorado, camping in 1977, I never left!

Regards,
Les

Chatfield State Park is great as well. It's to the South of the city near Littleton.

We have always stayed at Haviland Lake forest service campground about 20 miles North of Durango on US550. There would be full hook-ups there I think.

There is also a campground on Junction Creek on the North end of Durango. I have never stayed there, but my parents seem to enjoy it.

La Plata Canyon just west of Durango on US160 has a FS campground that is somewhat off the beaten path. Some nice off road trails up La Plata if you are in to that.

You could always head North of Durango about 50 miles to Silverton Colorado. Tons of dry camping opportunity on what they call the Alpine Loop area.

Enjoy!
