NJ to OBX - Best Route to Drive

Arrived safe and sound, no travel issues at all (no traffic). Drove through the night, caught a few hours sleep at a FlyingJ, and pressed on. 10 hours driving time from Northern NJ.

For posterity, here was my route...

  • 95 South
  • 695 South (Over the Frances Scott Key Bridge)
  • 95 South
  • 295 South (around Richmond)
  • 64 east
  • 664
  • 64
  • 168
  • 158
  • 12

I see a sweet Senaca across the way (easy to spot, no one is here), I'll have to stop by and say hello

Post some pic's if you have the time. Thinking very seriously about making a side trip to OBX on our way to Florida this winter. Kind of ashamed of myself for not going there before now. We are big on history and don't live that far away. Just listened to an audio book on the Wright brothers this week.

I posted a link to some campground photos I took earlier in the thread - feel free to check them out. If you haven't been to OBX before, you should stop on your way down. There is a ton of aviation and nautical history here. Aviation is the big draw for me - had the opportunity to land at the little airport next to the Wright Brother's monument last year. That was a bucket list item!

Just an FYI this season I drove the CBBT for the first time driving my F250 and towing my 26 RLS. It was a breeze. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Thanks to all of you for visiting our beautiful state. the OBX will not disappoint you. Please allow me to suggestions while visiting Hatteras Island. Since you are at camp Hatteras and provided the weather is cooperating. Go over to the sound side and view the sunset across the Pamlico Sound. Simply beautiful!!! Secondly, if you have a toad or tow vehicle and are in a venturous mood. Go south on Hatteras and take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island (approx 30-45 min ferry trip). I absolutely love the village. If you are up for some good food and frosty beverages try Howard's Pub at Ocracoke. Tell'em Kave&Lucky sent you!!

X2 on what Kave&Lucky have stated..... This area is one of the nicest spots on the east coast. Well worth the effort getting there.
