Outer Banks

Hi All,

Any recomendations on camp sites and things to do in the Outer Banks in North Carlina. Looking at visiting in June with two teenagers.

We camped in Cape Hatteras. There is a pretty neat lighthouse south of there, but unfortunately it was closed to the public the day we were there (although you could walk the grounds and read the placards that told of the history of it). It was pretty windy the three nights we stayed there in late May 2009.

No, don't bother to post a response to the question in my title above because no matter how long you're at the OBX, you probably won't have enough time to see and do all that's there. Using your favorite browser, just do a search on outer banks and you'll get enough websites to visit that will overwhelm you with information and keep you entertained for months.

I haven't been to the OBX since 2001 but my first visit there was back in 1961 as a child. Our family camped in a huge wall tent at the U.S. Government's Cape Point Campground on Hatteras Island. I've seen the OBX transform from a desolate area with nothing but small, "mom & pop" businesses to a highly-developed area with commercialism everywhere.

There's a lot of history that took place on the OBX and plenty of museums and attractions to learn about it. For your teenagers, it's an educational experience that will not be forgotten.

I'm sure you'll enjoy everything about the OBX except the crowds and traffic- which can be rather intense at times during the summer. Be sure to take lots of mosquito repellant as the "skeeters" can be down right nasty; especially if the wind's blowing in the "right" direction which pulls them out of the swamps.
