Overnight near Atlanta, GA ?

Good morning all

We are starting to plan our annual Fall trip from Florida to the Smokies.
This year, we have an added day, so we're thinking of throwing in an extra stop to make it a more leisurely trip.

Can anyone recommend a good overnight stop, somewhere around (but not in) Atlanta? We'll be traveling I75, so a CG not too far off the route would be good.
We have a 19XUD, a hybrid TT, so we don't need a big space or a pull-through, a basic hookup will be good.

We had a very disappointing experience at a KOA in the area, last year, so any recommendations would be very welcome.

Thanks

We usually go from the Smokies through Greenville and Athens and by pass Atlanta. Probably too soon for you but the Veterans Campground near Cordele is beautiful and quiet.

There is a KOA right off I-75 a few miles South of Cordele. Also Fair Harbor CG in Perry is right off the highway. There is another KOA in Forsyth. All make for a nice overnight stop and we've used each numerous times. Forsyth is the closest to Atlanta.

There really isn't much else in that area close to I-75 that we ever saw and we've traveled that route for many years.

A couple of state parks aren’t too far off 75. High Falls and Indian Springs are about 45 minutes south of Atl. About the same distance past Atl is Red top mountain. I haven’t stayed at any of them so I can’t comment on that. There are also COE campgrounds around Lake Alatoona.

We really like Stone Mountain. It's about 25 - 30 minutes east of Atlanta, not too far off I-285.

X2 for Stone Mountain. If you're going to make a day of the stop over, this is the place to go. Campground itself needs some renovation. But the location is awesome and there is tons to do at Stone Mountain Park. As mention, it's a little off of I75. So if you're looking for something right on the interstate, find a different option.

Stone Mnt would get my vote as well if you are going to make a day of it. The State parks I listed above wouldn't be a bad option for an overnight stop right past or before Atlanta to help you avoid either rush hour. Only bad thing is reservations. If I remember correctly it is a 2 night min on reservations but if you call the park the day of and if any spots are available you can get just one night. I never stayed at any of them but I don't think they are in the top as far as camping popularity goes. Growing up the ones south of ATL were a big local destination for picnics and other day activities.

There is a KOA just west of I-75 in Tifton (60m north of FL line). Reed Bingham SP 7 miles west of Adel (MP 39). Also a campground ( cannot remember name) at Lake Park (exit 5) next to Camping World. All have full hookups.

Also all GA state parks have senior discounts for camping and on site purchases.

That is now owned by Camping World.

It was built out and operated by Camping World a few years ago. It's now been sold and operated by a private owner.

It is no longer connected to connected CW, except it is just down the road (about 1/4 mile) from Camping World.

And check out this article about 4 Georgia state parks on or near I-75.

Stone Mountain is a great destination but not for just one night. You won't want to leave if you can get in there.

And for all intents and purposes in Atlanta which is sprawling more every day, in 25 years our county 50 miles north of Atlanta has gone from 50,000 to over 200,000!

You might want to clear Atlanta before you think about stopping. Traffic on Interstates can be heavy and slow, especially during rush hours, and even weekends.

I find, when towing and even without, the best time to get around Atlanta is around 2AM. No joke.

Grumpy, I do not like the KOA in Forsyth. Personal opinion I guess but too many permanents there. There is another campground that is very nice right off I-75 call Twin Oaks campground. Much nicer than any of those as far as I am concerned. Nice pull through campsites and nice game room and hot tub. Folks are really friendly there. Exit East of I-75 at exit #127(ga hwy 26) and it is immediately on your left. I recommend it highly to persons passing through. Georgia Veterans is a great state park but about 10 miles off the interstate and does not have sewer hookups.

Atlanta is a crapshoot anytime The first tie I went around it was at two am and in the dark it was scary with heavy merges from the left and the right at the same time it seemed.

Don't do your first go round there in the dark.

I like to get it over. While traffic there is never fun, starting the day by diving into it is not a good idea. So it depends on which way we are coming from.
