Report on Hungry Mother SP/Burson CG near Marion, VA

Well, we spent the last 4 days in Burson CG just outside of Hungry Mother SP in southwest VA, and it was one of the nicest CGs we've been to. CG is very flat, and most of the sites were large enough that you could spread your elbows and put out some outdoor games, like cornhole and ladderball, and leave them there for the duration. It's a great park for kids, with plenty of space to ride bikes on the asphalt roads, a brand new shower/bath building, lots of trails to hike, swimming, boating, fishing, etc. My wife usually gets eaten alive by bugs if there are any within a mile, but she couldn't believe that we were 20 yards from a nice quiet creek with almost ZERO bugs !! The sites are first come first served, so you could pick your spot when you got there, and you were guaranteed at least what you reserved for (in our case - full hookup). We had a great time, and plan on returning for a longer stay as soon as we can. The only downside is that they cannot accommodate trailers longer than 35 feet, because the state road to the park has a VDOT limit of 35 feet due to a few sharp turns. Our 5er is 33 feet, and the TV is 22 feet, and we had no trouble getting in or out. We highly recommend this CG to all.

Glad to hear the newly acquired section turned out good. I remember when that was a private campground in years past. We haven't been there in a few years but we always enjoyed it and camped along the creek in the campground farthest away from the office.

Hungry Mother was one of the first six state parks in Virginia. It opened in 1936 and was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
