Salt Lake City to Sacramento

Planning a trip from St. Louis, Mo. to San Fransico with a week stop in Salt Lake City, Utah starting in late May. Will be stopping in Sacramento for a few days as well.
The leg of the trip from Salt Lake to Sacrament looks pretty boring and too far for my driving it in one day. I like to keep my driving down to about 6 hours. Any suggestions for route or waypoints for this leg of the road trip?

We will do the SLC to Sacremento leg again this fall. We always do I-80. Previously we have stopped at New Frontier RV Park in Winnemucca, NV. It's about 350 miles from SLC. It's about 300 miles from Winnemucca to Sacremento, but you have to go over the Sierra's so I consider Winnemucca about half way.
