Savannah is RV friendly

First trip to Savannah, Georgia. Took the Greyhawk into the old historic district with some trepidation as I've been piloting it less than a year and was concerned about getting around and especially parking. I was very happy to find the
Savannah Visitors information Center on Martin Luther King Blvd. has RV-specific parking spaces, extra long and wide. Had no trouble at all backing the Greyhawk into one. We stayed about 5-6 hours and I was surprised to find out the parking tab was only $4.

I was also concerned about going down some of the streets as they are lined with stately old oaks draped with Spanish moss. Wasn't sure if we'd fit but saw the local tourist trolleys plying those streets and figured we'd be okay, too.

I wonder if there are other towns which have RV parking conveniently located within walking distance of their main tourist attractions?

How about camping around Savannah? Any CG's you could recommend?

Since this is our first trip to the Savannah area I can only speak about one with any personal knowledge. After leaving Savannah we pulled into Fort McAllister State Park for the week. Nice state park if you do not need all the amenities of a full RV resort.

The streets are paved, all RV sites but one are pull-through and all are heavily shaded. The sites have 30 amp electric and water. There is a central dumpster for trash and a dump station. Park has a paved boat ramp, a large floating dock and ample trailer parking. Ranger station sells bagged ice and rents bikes, canoes and kayaks. There is a large Publix supermarket in Richmond Hill on the road to the park for last minute stocking up.

We have heard from others that the nearby Skidaway Island State Park is very nice, but it was booked for this week.

Hope this helps.

We stayed at Savannah Oaks and we weren't impressed. We were there in April and the owners said to be careful as the copperheads we starting to come out at night. Well, there were brown leaves everywhere, so there was no way you would see a snake. Not the best campground if you have a dog.

Finally dumped my camera's memory card and found a pic of the RV parking spaces at the Savannah Visitors Center. Would be nice if more towns had these.

I love Savannah, gorgeous little city. We usually go in February to visit the city.

Last time we stayed at Savannah Oaks. We used it as a base camp, basically slept there and ate breakfast there. Spent the rest of the time in the city. It was convenient and reasonably priced. Reviews weren't that great, but it was the only thing left for last minute reservations.

For the life of me I cannot remember where else we have stayed while visiting there... I want to try Skidaway Island State Park, I don't think I have ever been there.

What about Red Gate Campground and RV Resort?
I've heard good things about it.
I'd like to go for Christmas break this winter.

Yes. There is an attendant at the exit.

We often stay at the Savannah South KOA on our way to or from Florida. We have always found it clean and friendly. Walking along the lake and watching the Swans and geese is always enjoyable. The pool looks good although we have never used it.
