We're headed to Gatlinburg Easter week and are staying at Riveredge RV park in Pigeon Forge. We have not stayed here before, but looks very nice. It has a pool, full hook-ups, and nice bathrooms and playground. I think it's kinda pricey since their base price includes 2 or 3 people and then charge for rest, but I did like the location. I can report back afterward and give you my thoughts.

The KOA in Cherokee was fine other than you can't get cell phone reception because its in a valley. The Pigeon Forge KOA was OK. We have stayed a couple of times in the Asheville West KOA, also not bad.

We stayed at the KOA in Townsend. http://koa.com/campgrounds/townsend-great-smokies/ Less crowded than the Gatlinburg area. At the Townsend KOA, my kids enjoyed the pool and tubing down a river/stream that is adjacent to the campground (water level varies with seasons). When we were there, water level for tubing was about 3-4 ft, just deep enough to go tubing (fun!), because is rained the previous day. After a day of sightseeing and no rain, the river/stream was not deep enough for tubing. Most sites are shaded and have adequate spacing. There are sites on the riverbank but some of those can be tight depending upon the size of your rig. Overall, a nice KOA.

Been to Gatlinburg I called it Little Las Vagas due to all the neon lights and the horrible traffic.

Personally I would drive away as fast as you can.

I just this past weekend booked 6 nights @ Smoky Bear Campground for this summer before school starts again. Never been there but the reviews sounded pretty good. It has a pool and playground for the kids (a requirement for us as well).

Did you ever find a place to go if you're still planning a trip?

It's like driving through the Magic Kingdom. Find the gatlinburg bypass and stick to it.
