I have been planning a trip out to Mt. Rushmore as well and have been looking into this for a while now. Everyone that has been there and knows is telling me Rafter J-Bar Ranch campground is the best in the area for miles. I seem to find the same thing when doing searches on forums and such too. I recently ran into someone while vacationing in Florida and when we started talking about my trip to Mt. Rushmore he immediately said Rafter J was the place to stay.

So... I booked my site there. Sounds like it will be a good place and the website looks pretty good as well.

We are booked for a 3 week stay at Custer's Gulch campground in August after the sturgis bike week. We did a lot of looking online and asking questions. We decided this was the place. Also looking at Google Maps, this campground was spread out pretty good. Talking to a few people that have stayed there the sites are spaced anywhere from 40-60 feet apart, not packed and stacked.

Great family trip!

We were out there last June and stayed at Rafter J. The spots are really nice and it wasn't crowed at all. IMOP it's the nicest and easiest to get a big camper into. Our trip was the second week in June, while the weather was cool, there were NO lines at any of the attractions.

We visited Mount Rushmore last summer enroute home from picking up our RV in North Carolina. We didn't stay in the area but when we drove past the KOA Mount Rushmore my wife and I both said that we would absolutely give that one a serious look when and if we visited the area again. Looked like a beautiful spot.

We stayed at Hill City KOA/Palmer Gulch. It was a great place, lots for the kids to do as well as the adults. I will stay there again when we go back.

Custer's Gulch is a nice, quiet campground, with a lot of space between sites. Spent a week there this last July, and would definitely stay there again.

Hi Bob, actually you were the last person I spoke to about Custer's Gulch. We are excited about our upcoming trip there. Thanks for the warning about showing up early.
