To AK

Any advice on staying in Denali AK park would be great...

Coming from MN...

we plan on staying in the park for 7 days minimum.

we are also looking to stay in Brook Falls for 2 or 3 days as well...

I see you can't drive your car out for 3 days.. from one of the campgrounds.. which would be fine.. as long as it isn't 20 degrees

are there other campgrounds outside the park that are worth checking out?

planning on being up there in August.. possibly 4 weeks total time.. Would like to stop in Banff on the way back for at least 3 days..

I was not there in an RV but I rode my motorcycle to Alaska and back 2 years ago and stayed at Grizzly Bear Campground outside of Denali National Park. The RV section seemed to be very nice, everything was well kept but had a nice natural feel to it as well. Depending on the size of your rig and possibly your need for hookups they have some nice wooded sites and some more open and with less privacy. They also had an excellent Thai food truck in the parking lot. It's very convenient to the park entrance and close to the little tourist Village as well. I would definitely recommend it.

What are your plans when at Denali? Just thinking that 4-5 days is plenty to see Denali. Other than the road into the park where you have to have purchased shuttle or tour tickets and the visitor center there is not a lot to see and do in the area.

Teklanika campground is a minimum of 3 night stay and you must keep your vehicle stationary during that time. Also this is dry camping site with only pit toilets and no showers available. You will need to shuttle tickets to ride further into the park. Riley Creek Campground is close to the visitor center, does not have a minimum stay requirement but you will still need shuttle or tour tickets to get further in to the park itself. It is dry camping as well but does have flush toilets and showers nearby.

We visited Denali last summer and our recommendations and/or things we want to do and see on a return trip are:

Shuttle bus to Wonder Lake into the park
River rafting Nenana river
Drive Denali Highway
Hike Triple Lakes Trail and Savage River

Not sure if Homer, Seward and Valdez are on you list of places to see in Alaska but we highly recommend them. All of Alaska is beautiful!

Thank you for the input... yes we are planning on going down to homer and up through Valdez. I figured 5-7 days in Denali was a good amount of time looks like closer to 5.. We love to hike so that will keep us busy and we owe the kids a raft trip from last year... thank you!

Thanks for the Grizzly Bear campground that may be the way to go... we still like electricity... Thanks for the info.

You are doing yourself a great disservice limiting camping choices to full hookups. We did our 3d Alaska trip earlier this year [June/July] in an ABC MH. Denali was the only place where we camped in an actual CG [Savage River] and loved it. It is relatively small and several miles into the park and away from the Village center. You can ride the free Savage River bus to get back to the village. If you have a generator, you should be good to stop where ever you want in the middle of nowhere and enjoy cocktails while watching moose and caribue munching away.Alaska is unlike anything you will find anywhere in the lower 48. Outside of Anchorage, Fairbanks and a few other very small communites, Alaska is a giant national park and they still allow you to pretty much do it your way. Forget the hookups and go for it.

Some other things to consider when planning an Alaska roadtrip. 1] There is one lengthy loop that leaves Anchorage up to Denali and on N thru Fairbanks before you turn south again and continue south. At Glenellon you can turn east and back toward Anchorage. 2] Once you drive to Denali your options will be to complete the loop at least to Glenellen OR backtrack to Cantwell where you have the option to go E and cross the 130 mile Denali hwy. 3] The Denali hwy is gravel except for the last few miles on the Paxton side. It is full of potholes and washboard ruts that will rattle everything in your RV. Great drive but be prepared. There is no way to abort [other than turning around] once you start the hwy. 4] From Glennellen you can head on S thru Thompson pass and Valdez. Tompson pass may well be the most beautiful 15+ miles anywhere in the world that you can reach in an RV. 5] Homer and Seward are S from Anchorage so you'll have to either backtrack from Denali or make the full loop. These 2 communities are on the Kenai pennsila aka Alaskans playground. It is where folks from Anchorage go to vacation so it will be more crowed than the rest of Alaska.

Take your time and enjoy. Just one last comment. Most of the CG's are gravel lots with sardine type sites. You may have hookups but you also will be able to borrow sugar from the neighbor without leaving your site. The community CG's in Seward and Homor are large gravel lots and no hookups but give you a good point to walk the area's sites. These are small communites.
