Utah Travel Recommendations

Starting to pull together info for a 2019 August/September west coast trip.

My present routing through Utah will be I-80 west from Wyoming, to north I-84 into Idaho....., my return trip will I-80 east from Nevada taking I-80 east across the state of Utah ....., but considering possible route deviations along the way for "must see" locations.

Would appreciate any recommended Utah "must see" locations..., and National, State, or private Campground recommendations along the way. I anticipate some boondocking and camping w/hook-ups along the way.

I've also created a couple separate JOF threads for other States that I will be traveling through.

Thanks in advance.

Bob

Rockport State Park is right along your route, East of Salt Lake City.

We were in Juniper campground, in one of the spaces nearest the lake.

Water and electrical hookups, No sewer in the campsite - but a dump-station about 2/3 miles away. You will need to go onto the State Parks website and get reservations for this busy time of the year, especially if on a Fri,Sat,Sun.

With 5 National Parks and over 200 State Parks there's always something to see in Utah.

We've held a couple of family reunions at Rockport State Park and it is nice.

If you are looking for a nice place to overnight Willard Bay State Park is a few miles north of Ogden right off I-84 at exit 357. We've stayed at the Cottonwood campground a few times on our way to and from southern Utah/Northern Arizona. A few miles north from that is Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

Most of the good part of Utah is in the southern half, below I 70. Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Moab etc...Watch I 80, winds in Wyoming can get horrible, blowing over Semi Trailers. I do everything possible to avoid I 80 myself..lots of open space with nothing to stop the winds.

I can't say enough good things about this RV park: https://www.camperworld.com/echo-isl...ground-resort/

We stayed there on our way to Yellowstone and were very impressed. Recently renovated. The facilities are immaculate, restrooms etc. spotless. The Echo river splits and creates an island.

On our return trip, mid Sept, we R&R'd for 5 nights. Most of the time we had our choice of one of the 3 Jacuzzis and the 2 swimming pools.

The small town of Coalville a mile away, has a nice old grocery store, wood floors, a butcher counter, and a package goods store for liquer.

You can't go wrong, DW approved!

Best,
Steve

I appreciate all the responses thus far and plan to locate each recommendation as they are posted on my Utah map.

Once I have a good representation of "must see" and camping locations along my proposed route through Utah, then I can re-visit my travel routing.

I'm sure I'll have some follow-up questions as I pull together your recommendations.

Bob

I would suggest rerouting your trip through Southern Utah, multiple national and state parks. Zion and Bryce are awesome. If you have a dog, and are going to Bryce, suggest you stay at Kodachrome State Park, which is almost a "must see." This park is just beautiful, has great scenery, and just a short drive to Bryce.

Many have suggested that you should take the southern Utah route during this time of the year... If you are limited to visit during the hot summer months (August/September) during the most crowded months of the visitor season in southern Utah - plan on bringing your genny and running it 18/7 to keep your rig cool.

Keeping the northern route during the heat of the summer reduces your dependency on AC/Genny and allows the northern sights to be discovered. Plan on Southern Utah in the spring and fall to really enjoy the "Big-5".

If your staying in northern utah, you could go north from Evanston Wyoming and head over to bear lake, we stay on the Idaho side of the lake in St. Charles.
