Vancouver BC... Here we come!
We have the opportunity to visit Vancouver in June. Although not camping, we are excited to see Vancouver for the first time! We have two full days, will stay in the downtown area, not interested in 'museums' or 'shopping' for this particular trip...
-we will rely on public transportation
-water activities (kayaking, evening cruise)? any suggestions? (I hate to be cold...would this not be for me? etc etc)
-a day or night on Robson St... concerns or issue's with personal safety?
-weather... typical or varied?
Thanks in advance for thoughts/suggestions

I suggest a visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge ( http://www.capbridge.com/).
Very impressive.

Weather should be fine, for a Cali a light sweater or jacket for night time. A kayak from Granville Island, lots of weird stores/art to Fals Creek gives you lots to look at.
Skytrain has a station right at YVR(airport) to downtown. Cheap, fast.
Only caution I can think of is stay away fron the downtown eastside at night. Druggies, some people not taking their meds, etc.
Next time stay longer, we'll do lunch.

We spent a couple days during September prior to an Alaskan cruise and the weather was perfect for just a light sweater and slacks. Enjoy!!! We, too, enjoyed some wonderful Asian cuisine while there.

We have lots of mountains so we only pay for gas going up.

Hope you have a great time here, The Capilano suspension bridge for sure and Grouse Mountain as mentioned. The Main st. and Hastings st. area is what is refered to as the Downtown Eastside. It is very close to Chinatown and is full of open hard drug use. Water street in Gastown is worth the walk. We have lots of street food carts around Robson st. that are worth trying. Stanley park is also a great stop. You should be able to find Kayaking on Granville Island. Weather wise in June it should be nice about 75 in the day and 60 at night, bring an umbrella!!

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the suggestions/recommendations. We actually think we have a full two day itinerary based on the posts from this thread.
We appreciate knowing where the safe/unsafe areas are also.
No gas worries as we are flying in and plan to use public transportation. I like that Capilano has a free shuttle also.
Thanks again everyone!

Which cruise line did you take? What did you wind up doing in Ketchikan and Skagway?

Currency exchange... we know it's more costly at the airport.
-What/where is the best way to exchange US$ to Canadian$?
-We would be trying to exchange after 5pm (our hostel requires cash payment for balance due).

Some banks or trust companies have evening & Saturday hours. They will give the best rate. Also, you may find in a large shopping mall, a store called "Travel Currency Exchange". They have same rates as the banks.
Search with this link;
http://www.canada411.ca/
The bank names to look for are;
TD Bank -- this one has the best hours of operation
Scotiabank
CIBC
BMO Bank of Montreal
National Bank
Royal Bank of Canada
Maybe one of these options will be on your route.

Look for a TD Canada Trust, they have the best hours and are open until at least 8.00 PM. Don't use the airport kiosks or you will pay through the nose.
I have not been to Vancouver in probably 20 plus years but it is know as one of the most expensive cities in the world, but they do have Macdonalds and of course our favourite Tim Hortons, so go in for a double double plus a donut. You can't go wrong.

As you know, TD Canada Trust and TD Bank Financial Group are one and the same. Hard to tell which name they want to be known by these days.

Royal Caribbean. Mind you, we did this in Sept 1998! Ketchikan was beautiful & NO rain! We took a inflatable raft type dinghy tour and saw an eagle. No moose though!
Skagway--We did the White Pass Yukon railroad route. Very nice! The weather was very nice so I got to stand outside & take some wonderful pics. We also enjoyed just walking through the town. Seems to have "old west" feel to it. They also have on display in town the train engine they use or used to plow snow off tracks.
Alaska is where we discovered the goodness of salmon & halibut!

I am sure u can change currency rate at YVR for a decent rate. Post up as you can while you are here and we can keep you on track.
