Yellowstone

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone with our Class C Jayco. Does anyone have any suggestions for RV camping?

Depending on when your going you may have to have reservations months in advance. This is true near any tourist areas...campgrounds fill up quickly during peak travel months Memorial Day thru Labor Day.

Good Luck.

Here is the contents of a post from my post two years ago:

Ok, we just did a 2 week trip to Yellowstone. We have a pretty big 32 foot trailer, and no reservations. It worked out very well for us, and incredibly cheap. If you are interested, this is how it played out.

We began our trip at the north entrance. We knew if we wanted to stay at Mammoth Campground, we had to arrive on a weekday and early. So we camped 20 miles north of Mammoth for one night at the Carbella Recreation Area. Right on the river, BLM land, so its free, and big rig friendly.

The next day, Monday, we woke up early and arrived at Mammoth by 8:30 a.m. Three cars/trailers in front of us already waiting, but no problem getting a nice pull through. The campground filled up around 10:45. It is dry camping, 20 bucks a night.

After four nights we moved to West Yellowstone. We stayed at Bakers Hole Campground, around 3 miles north of town. Beautiful, right on the river, big rig friendly. With electric it is $23, without electric, $17. Arrive early if you want electric. We dumped at the Grizzley Campground in West Yellowstone. I think they want 92 bucks there for a full hookup pull through. I think that's a lot of money to be packed in like a sardine.

After 5 days we traveled east and camped just outside the east entrance at Three Mile campground. No problem getting a spot, big rig friendly, and 15 bucks at night. Spent three nights there.

Now, friends, this is dry camping, there are no hookups (although there was electric at Bakers Hole). But we have a generator, and solar, and are self contained. I know that dry camping is not for everyone, but I recommend you try it. I know you all like saving money!

However you camp, please enjoy.

A few tips from a traveler who was there in May. The Road out/in on east side is as nasty as it gets. Maybe they have a lane with asphalt open now but it makes a road to Alaska look like a super highway. The big campground by the fishing bridge is closed for the season doing a redo.

West Yellowstone has quite a few commercial spots as does the east side. Couple good KOA's on West side of park about 8 miles out. In the park I doubt you can book on the smaller campgrounds. May be best anyway as the mosquitos are quite mature this time a year. Not sure of your approach to the park. Lovely place but this time of season a real crowded adventure. 4 million people on those two lane roads each year. Good luck.

Been going to Yellowstone for 45 years. First trip at 15 with parents. Not a nicer place to camp in my opinion. It has changed a lot because of the number of people that come there. The bus tours are bringing lots of tourists compared to the old days. My advice go early May to June or late August and September. Also book Campgrounds in park a year in advance if possible. We go every other year and book in May for the following year.

Call daily and you might get a spot in the park make your calls early 8am when phone lines open. Good luck. You will love the place.

Enjoy the journey

Was just there at the start of June. I agree with the comments on the east side road. In a class C not an issue. Just rough and tight lanes. I have a trailer and it claimed a tire. We didn’t plan ahead, so it was a KOA in Cody which was ok, and then a KOA in West Yellowstone. Mountainside I think it was called. I actually liked that place, and I’m usually not big fan of KOA’s. To the south we stayed at Gross Ventre. It’s a first come first serve place closer to the Teton national park. Have fun.

Just got back from 14 days dry camping in Yellowstone, and 3 days at Headwaters campground at Flagg Ranch w full hookups between Grand Teton and Yellowstone.
We stayed at Bridgebay campground inside Yellowstone close to lake site 47 a beautiful pull thru site (no shade) lots of stars at night it’s at about 7600 alt no issues. We made reservations last year.met many staying with no res but they qued up early am at registration and moved several times as availability fluctuates.
We have gen WH Igen4500 worked great (quite time 8-8) and a 120w solar suit case again we had no power issues. I have 2 6 gal water cans and fill up fresh as needed and a barker tote for gray/black dumping. We used Bridgebay as a base and drove around park for hiking and major spots.
We had Bison and elk male and females w/babies coming thru of site and they would wander about during the day.Truly a special place.
My advice bring enough bug spray it’s expensive inside park.
