Our family is on a 2 year journey RV'ing throughout the U.S.. Does anyone have a favorite campground they can recommend near Yellowstone? We tow a 5er, 35 foot. Thanks.

Don't know about CG's, but I've been told that Beartooth Pass is a must see. Just north of Yellowstone.

Rainbow Point Campground, part of the Gallatin Forest in Montana, about 6 miles north of West Yellowstone, No hookups, but it's a really nice forest service campground

We stayed down at Grand Tetons NP, then went up the road in Yellowstone NP - a week in total. Went last week of May of 2011, during the migration period, when most of the herds were returning - absolutely amazing when you have to stop while a heard of 200 Bison cross in front of you. One of the best family trips we ever took. I suspect that they may be full by now.

Last year we stayed a couple of night about an hour north of Yellowstone at a Montana SP called Lewis And Clark Caverns. They have a nice cave tour. There was another SP in the area that was an old ghost town that was restored. We heard very good things about it but we did not stop.

East of Yellowstone we stayed a KOA in Custer (WY) for a few days. There is a LOT to see and Do Custer.

As for in Yellowstone, your rig might be to large for any of the NP run CGs, they are also a first come first serve CG I was told they fill up by 11am at the latest, and the popular CG file up by 9:30am. I think they have about a 25-35 foot rig size limit (I called Yellowstone for info, as I did not like their webpage). We stayed at Tower Falls, again it was a first come first, there was really only two spots where I could get into luckily one was open, and I had to put into 4x4 mode to get into the space. We left a little sooner than planned as my DW did not enjoy the crazy crowds and all the driving. My recommendation if you are going to try to stay in the park is to find a more central location to stay.

If you are looking to stay outside of the park there are a lot of options, including an incredible number of state and federal forests CGs.

We really did enjoy Yellowstone, and would like to go back during the non peak season.

Beartooth Pass is a must see! It travels out of the park and down into Red Lodge, Montana. Due to elevation and the amount of snow, it probably will not be passable until July or August however.

We really did enjoy Yellowstone, and would like to go back during the non peak season.

We were fortunately able to go after Labor Day a few years ago and basically had the park to ourselves. The temps were still mild and the trout were biting!::
