Reading this thread and we are newbies. We have a similar setup as you. We just purchased the Swift 198 RD and towing with a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4-door TRD. What generator do you use? Thanks

I don't use a generator but I would say weigh your needs .. a/c, lights , coffee maker , battery charge, and figure how many watts you could need at most but I would definately get the invertor type of generator because it is safer cleaner power

We use a "Champion" 3100/2800 Watt Generator/Inverter. They are nice and quiet (58DB) and runs the A/C or Microwave (not a 1300 watt Microwave and A/C together) With full tank I (70) still can lift it in my truck bed. Honda and Yamaha's are at least twice the price. Also parts are easy to get for the "Champion". Look at Costco prices they have them on sale once and awhile. We sold our 198RD a month ago they are nice units and easy to pull.

Consider service if you need it. We don't live near any cheap dealers..Costco is a couple hundred of miles away. That said we got a couple hundred bucks off a Honda EU2000i in January from a local dealer. He might not have been the cheapest but the closest reliable service center.
We are not sure that 2000 w will cut it if it gets really hot. We are going to New Mexico in the spring.
Time will tell.
We don't have A/C at home so camping in Maine or any NE state..we probably would never use it.

The EU2000i will not spin a 13.5 AC in the heat. Maybe at sea level and 70 degrees, but not in the heat.

Hey Kim Gass- Where are you going in NM in spring? It really doesn't get too hot unless you are in the southern part of the state. No humidity either. We hardly ever use our AC while NM camping. The nites cool off real nice too. Depending on where you are the temps drop 25 to 50 degrees.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Here is my review of the Yamaha EF2000isV2 inverter generators. I use two of them in parallel. Biggest advantage is they only weigh 45 pounds each and have a fuel shut off valve so they can be run dry.

If you're asking about a generator because you boondock how about 4 6v battery option wired in series. Should get you by for up to a week without too much sacrifice. Can't run the a/c but heck, why go camping where it's that hot? Just my opinion but then again I live where it's hot so we always head to the coast or the mountains.

Carlsbad, Bandelier, White Sands,Chaco. And the old getting there through Texas.. Hope to not use the AC either. Death Valley a possibility. We're used to sleeping in the cool. Our house is heated...at 64 and we like to camp ( tent) in the 40's.

Kim Gass you only have a 8000 BTU A/C your 2000 watt Honda will run that, so you should be OK in the heat.

I have heard various start up wattage needs ranging from 1700-2300. If it doesnt work it doesnt work.. We've camped where the low is 82 in a tent and lived. Didn't like it but lived

I recently picked up a 2000 watt Champion and testing it with the AC in our 195RB it seems to be fine. I have a Kill-o-Watt meter and haven't seen it spike much about 1200-1300 watts when kicking in. We also picked up a 12v Fantastic Endless Breeze fan as well. It's quieter than the fan-only mode on the AC and doesn't require shore power.

I use this unit as well,up where we are, A/C is really not needed. I picked my unit up at home depot for $458 on sale. It's a great unit, very quiet except when we run the microwave.

If we want A/C down the road them we just pick up another unit and run them parallel. I try to keep on eye on weight since I pull with a half ton and a 28ft trailer doesn't leave much for payload.

I see CampingWorld.com has the Champion 2000 Watt Inverter Generator 73540i on sale for under $500 w free shipping.

2000 Watt Inverter Generator with USB - Champion Generators 73540I - Portable Generators - Camping World

I'd be using to recharge battery, after it dies powering my furnace.

I need something light -- I'm small. This generator weighs 48.5 pounds. I'll be putting it on some kind of cart/dolly.

Can anyone comment on this generator's suitability for my situation? User reviews? Thanks.

I ponied up for the better engine in the Yamaha. Generators run for long periods of time. There is a reason Honda and Yamaha inverter generators are more expensive. Pay now or pay later, as they always say.

I picked one of these up in February and so far I'd say it's been so-so. It does run everything I need it to run and is fairly quiet. However, when I was first breaking it in it went through a lot of fuel - a gallon in only about 3 1/2 hours and wouldn't handle much load at all. I called Champion a couple of times before somebody there finally hit on something - the choke cable was not adjusted properly from the factory. It was too tight so the choke was still somewhat engaged even when it was pushed all the way in. Once I adjusted it properly it started running like I would expect it to.

I purchased a Honda 3000iS inverter generator when they were on sale before Christmas. I have not had a chance to use it but one of the main factors besides being on sale was the run time spec of 20 hours @ 1/4 load.
