Heat w/out hookup

Hey all, we will be boondocking this summer in Wyoming. Will my heat in a Jayco Jayflight run with full propane tanks and no hookup? Thanks in advance.

As long as you have a good battery, but you will need a way to recharge it. You might want to look into a portable solar charger.

As long as you have ample 12-volt battery power, yes you can run your furnace.

The camp ground will allow generators during the day so the plan is to recharge it a few hours each day. Thank you.

You're not going to need your heater in Wyoming in the summer.

As you already heard, your furnace runs off of 12V power. The fan consumes a lot of amps, and when the weather is really cool (20's), you can discharge a battery in a single night.

While at home some afternoon, I would recommend simulating boondocking. This will make sure you are familiar with your systems and what will not work.

As for a summer trip, you hope you wont need the furnace, but I can tell you, I have been in a blizzard every month of the year except August.

What do you have for a camper?

3- group 27 batteries will get you through the night - 2 on the A-Frame and one auxiliary connection.

As was mentioned previously, make a dry run first. Our heater surprised us last month on a 30 deg night in CO. 2021 236TH...dry camping. Heater would come on, cycle thru the sail switch, gas valve would open and furnace would light. It would run long enough to throw a bit of heat and then the gas valve would cycle off. It would continuously repeat this. We have 2 new group 27 batteries and they showed 12.5-12.7 VDC...more than adequate voltage to run the furnace. In the morning i fired up one of our EU2000 generators and plugged in the camper. House DC voltage showed 13.7 volts and the furnace ran fine. The dealer thinks control board issue. I would have caught this before our trip had I thought to test it first. Water heater and fridge worked fine the whole time so DC voltage should have been sufficient to run the furnace too.

I boondock 95% of the time and yes the heat will work. That said, the batteries will probably only last you 3 nights if its cold and the heat is on a lot. If I do a normal weekend camping trip my two Grp 27 batteries are definitely tired by the end.

Depends on the elevation. It could be fairly cold at night. I camped at 11,000' in early august last year and there was frost on everything each morning.

+1

Depends on where you are. I "got caught with my pants down" one night in South Dakota. Was absolutely stunningly beautiful during the day, in fact, the rig got a little warm. That night, it got pretty darn chilly. I woke up to my CPAP hose gurgling from condensation. Thought "what the heck is that happening for?" Got out of bed to "answer the call", discovered it had gotten down to 55 in the camper! I immediately kicked on the furnace because if DW had woken up to 55 in the rig, I'd NEVER hear the end of how "I'm trying to freeze her to death to collect her life insurance" or some other such thing that married couples jeer each other with!!

Consider, "Mr. Heater Portable Buddy" as a back-up plan. This is a small furnace that runs on small 1-lb LPG canister. I just ordered one form Camping World ($80 + tax)

You might want to consider the connections and the filter to connect to larger propane tanks (20# and up). The one pound last about 6 hours on medium/low and that can get pretty expensive. Don't skimp and fail to buy filters. The oil in the larger propane bottles will plug up the Mr. Heater and render it useless.
