Return trip this week boondocking in the Lake Michigan-Manistee National Forest area......, and throwing in a couple day-hikes in the Nordhouse Dunes trail system.

We have been kicking around the idea of boondocking or at least trying it once, anyone know of any nice places in Nor Cal? I'm leaning towards Lassen

Practice in Camp Driveway or your favorite park first. See if you can live on "just what you brung."
Then find a piece of private property or a park that allows camping, but has no hook ups.
After 3 or 4 tries you'll figure out what you need, don't need, can live without and the stuff you absolutely CAN'T live without.

we have dry camped and basically our trailer is stocked with the things we tent camped with so we are no frills. We just want out in the middle of nowhere places that can handle a trailer that is in the forest.

You are going to have to find a friend who knows somebody that has access to a hunting preserve.
You need something resembling a good road in. A place turn around. Reasonably level...
We have a spot that was sub-divided for vacation homes. So far 5 have been built out of 14 lots. Someday we'll put up a yurt.

we actually did find a place in plumas on a lake, I saw one guy off to the side in a camper and another cpl tent camping on a rock bluff, I guess I will need to find that again. Nice gravel fire road access to the lake. We spent the whole afternoon at the lake and never saw another car go by

Our forest service roads here are really good (in CA they have to be  ). We went to the local ranger office and they told us there is always a way out gave us great maps and one Ranger knew of many spots to go BD'ing. They were very helpful and glad we had come in to ask. We will always go in and let them know where we plan to be and get a fire permit when allowed. We get lots of people here that get lost in the middle of nowhere with no one knowing that they traveled that way, that will not be us!

Beautiful setting with the mountain background ....., wish we had some accessible BLM land east of the Mississippi that I could add to my present options!!
For myself a boondocking adventure starts when those nice hookups (electric, water, etc.) aren't available.

Here are two of mine. We boondock or dry camp about 75% of the time.
This one is my old trailer on the "dry side" of Oregon.
This one is my new Jayco 27RLS on the "wet side" of Oregon.

Alabama hills at the base of Mt Whitney (highest point in lower 48) about an hour from home.

Well it makes up for living in the high desert. 
Here's a couple more from the same area. First is my brother's rig and ours. 
This is on a hike up in the mtns there.
This is about 3 hours away..
