12 volt air compressor

Looking for a 12v air compressor to keep in the truck in case i need to add air to the tires when on the road. Any recommendations or things to consider?

One thing i was thinking is it would be good to have one with the battery clamp attachment, in case the 12v plug doesnt reach from the truck to the trailer tire?

Thanks

Newer ones, for the most part are crap. I really like this older reliable one:

And yes, a battery calmp cord is nice to have.

I mounted one on my truck. I personally would only use 100% duty cycle model of whichever brand and make sure it can deal with whatever pressure you might need. I used one of these and it has worked for over 15 years mounted under my truck and now my new truck. I have a 2.5 gallon tank for it as well and plumbed a quick connect to the rear of the truck so I can just plug in my air hose and it can reach all my truck and trailer tires, engine compartment, bed of the truck to fill my fishing toon or whatever else I may need air for at the moment.

They do make a portable unit as well. However there are variety of good ones out there. Viar is another one that comes to mind.

You might want to check this one out at Lowe's. Runs on both 12vDC and 120VAC (built in cables for both). I've used it and it works great. DC cord plugs into lighter and is about 25 feet long (if I remember right). AC works off inverter, generator, or shore power.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-12-V...tor/1000092575

KOBALT 12 Volt/120 Volt dual power inflator provides up to 120-PSI and is the perfect size to keep in your car, and quickly inflates items like car, bike and ATV tires, air mattresses and beach toys

DC power cord plugs into vehicle 12V power outlet or AC power cord plugs into standard 120 V household outlet

Digital gauge displays current pressure of item being inflated and allows you to preset your desired PSI from 1 to 120

I have the Ryobi inflator- runs on the same battery as my impact wrench and drill as well as my blower all of which stay with me for use around the campsite. Always have 3 charged batteries and it does tires, bikes, as well as air mattresses/rafts etc.

I am still getting good service out of my Q Industries MV50 150 lbs 12VDC portable air compressor... Came with a nice tote...

I topped off my 80 lbs tires just a couple of days ago....

When camping off -road I use the heck out of this unit doing on the spot winterizing of my trailer using one of these CAMCO 36153 Air Adapters. I can blow out all of my water lines in just a few minutes after draining from the low point drain point. The air compressor does not have a tank included so it is slower building up pressure to use and that is great for blowing out water lines...

I can setup on my dropped tail gate and plug into my trailer 12VDC battery bank using the 12V cables and the coiled air hose will walk around my trailer tires and truck tires or my City water port...

All of this was ordered from AMAZON back in 2009... I still see them listed in AMAZON...

Most handy item to carry under my truck rear seat...

Pretty much any of the 12v inflators by VIAIR will do a good job. Just avoid the ones that plug into the cigarette lighter.

I recently purchased the Viair 300p and it does an excellent job. Clips to the battery and powerful. Agreed, stay away from the cigarette lighter plug-ins.

++2 on Viair. And has been mentioned above - get the ones that attach straight to the battery.

They also have different classifications as "continuous duty" and others that are not. There is a difference in cost, but well worth the spend. We do a lot of Off-road travel in our FJC where we air down our tires to 15-PSI while rock crawling. As we get off of the trails, we need to air up all of our tires back to 40PSI to return on the highway.

$260 ouch! I suppose it's an investment in a high quality tool that will last a long time. But ouch! I'll put it on my wish list for now.

There are Viair models that are less expensive but don't come with all the accessories and extra hoses that this one does.

For $260 I'll stick with my compressor with 3 gal tank and Honda EU2000i.

I already had several Ryobi 18v tools & batteries, so I got one of their inflators as well. Works great, much easier to use, light weight and the gauge seems pretty accurate on it so far. If you already have the other tools, it's a no brainer for $25.

You can get the Viair 90P cheaper and it will work fine for tires up to 31". We have the 90P in our CRV and it works great.

For all that are still on the fence... If you are trying to fill up a tire on your Motorhome or Trailer that needs higher air pressures (we require 110PSI in our rear) some of these smaller inexpensive compressors will not do the job.

For a minimum, we need 1.0CFM at 150PSI to get the job done. I've sat on the side of the interstate with one of those cheap compressors for an hour waiting for the tire to get enough pressure to build up. Oh.. and NEVER will ever use valve stem extenders EVER again - a separate thread all on it's own!!!.
