12Volt vs 6Volt Trojan Battery Comparison

I just updated the "RVing with SOLAR" social group with a post that has the result of my 12Volt vs 6Volt battery comparison. For this comparison I only used the Trojan battery line. I just looked at performance, lifecycles and assume (hate that word) that proper maintenance will be carried out of the life of the batteries. Price was not a factor used in this comparison.

It may help you decide on your replacement batteries.

The only gotcha to keep in mind is if one fails in a two set 6 volt configuration it will need to be replaced immediately to restore functionality.

The fact that 6 volt systems offer double the amount of charge cycles pretty much seals it for me. I've never had a battery just up and fail on me. Lucky perhaps..

Don, what is the theory behind the 12volt having half the lifespan/half as many lifecycles ? Is there more internal heat generated when charging the 12v ?

I know Don specifically left cost out of the equation but I quickly priced the two out on Amazon for comparison purposes. To save a few clicks, the current Amazon Price of the 12v is $389 plus $5 shipping for a total of $394 per battery and two T145 6v are currently $189 plus $120 shipping for a total of $309 per battery.

The 12Volt batteries have thinner plates, as to the reason they only have 130Ah per battery. Some of the other manufactures do make 12Volt batteries with thicker plates but the size of one BIG battery (2x the size of a 6Volt) limits where you can mount them on a TT, without a major rewire.

yes, the price is prohibitive, and why would I pay extra for a shorter Lifecycle? Save enough to add more 6Volt batteries.

I hope to do a couple more comparisons with other mfr also... just because I have nothing to do at that moment. Now back out to the yard, where they just finished installing 200' of board over board fencing so I can get ready to start my back yard fence SOLAR project.

Once you are hooked on SOLAR it never stops.

I can't imagine buying batteries on Amazon or anywhere 'mail order' They totally kill you on shipping, not to mention the base price of the battery itself is often higher too, so you get hosed twice.

If someone wants to get the Trojans, recommend finding the closest dealer in your area so you don't have to worry about shipping at all (hopefully, and depending on where you live of course)

Trojan Battery - Dealers

BatteryStuff.com (which came up in my search as a local dealer) quoted me 340.00 total - for 2 T-105's.. (170 ea., compared to the 309 that was quoted above- out the door) at the will call desk in town.

The batteries I'm getting (T-105) if I were to buy on Amazon are $185.00 + $45.96 shipping. vs. $170.00 and no shipping to get them locally.

I wouldn't buy Trojans at all if I couldn't source them locally, that's a massive price jump. Most of us should be able to find them locally.

One of the major benefits of a Trojan or even an Interstate is that they can be purchased at anyone of their LOCAL dealers, which are all over the country.

Costco in my town sells 6v batteries for 83.99 each. Have no idea how they stack up against a brand like trojan.

The Batteries Plus franchise stores (at least the ones in Atlanta) sell the Trojans. Their website doesn't list them, but Trojan lists them as a dealer and when I was in one of their stores last week they had a ton of them on the shelf and he said he could get any model I wanted in a day.
Prices were decent but I don't remember exact numbers as I wasn't needing one at the time.

It really comes down to the plate thickness. As you can probably figure out the 12Volt products (like the SCS series) are designed for Marine / RV applications and are sort of a hold-over from when Trojan made starter batteries. Believe it or not, Trojan has not made dedicated starter batteries for about 10 years now. They originally designed the T-series batteries with Golf carts in mind and they put the thicker plates in them from the beginning. The thicker plates give you the additional Ah and gives us the longer cycle life that WE ALL HAVE LEARNED TO LOVE .

According to HandyBob, Crown Batteries are even better than Trojan;

I look at a purchase of a BATTERY from the perspective of:

- True Deep cycle (Not a Hybrid)
- Lifecycle,
- A GOOD National Distribution setup (for replacing defective batteries on the road ASAP)
- A good product warranty
- $$$$,
- Dealer support
- Customer Support.

If I have to a choice between, Crown, USBattery, or a Trojan battery (all top of the line batteries), and they all are 260Ah rated, if they have the same Lifecycle, a good national distribution setup (replace defective batteries) and if they have GREAT support, then it is only a decision on who has the best price. What good is a GREAT $$$$ deal when you do not have access to an immediate replacement of a defective battery.

HandyBob has his opinions on a lot of things, you just need to take his opinions and research them, just like you do for any other opinions you hear. Guaranteed, you will not agree on all of them.

12Volt vs 6Volt Trojan Battery Comparison

I checked today and the Battery Plus store has T105s for $107. He said if I wanted more than 2 he would cut me an even better deal.
Only downside is a $33 core charge if you don't have a 6v to recycle. And if you are replacing a 12v they only give you half credit.

So for me that's basically going to be $140 ea plus tax.
