4 wheel tank totes

Hi All, I am continuing my inventory to do some boon-docking and am in the market for a tank tote for waste, preferably one with 4 wheels that I can hook over the ball of my truck ball-hitch.
My waste tanks are 39 gallons each.
I've read you need a bigger tank to fill into to protect from overfilling onto the ground, shoes, etc?
I see the Barker 42 gal & Thetford 35 gal (being careful not to overfill portable tank)
I generally read the 1 & 2 star reviews first. There is enough negative reviews to scare me away.
Does anyone have any experience, advice on either brand - positive or negative?
Or is there another brand I am missing?
Is there a better homemade system you recommend? If so do you have any pics?
Thanks again for any advice/help

I have a smaller thetford and it is fine. The handle hooks to the hitch and just use a bungee to hold it down. I have the new design and it works great

I’ve had absolutely no issues with my Barker 42 gallon tote. I made sure I got the version with pneumatic tires (there are still some roaming around with hard plastic tires). Get an extra dump hose (little short one) because they tend to be cheaply made. One thing to be aware of, the larger tote tanks can be taller than the dump valve on your trailer. The inlet on my tote is higher than the exit on my Jayco and my Open Range. This led to me having to “help” the waste get into the tote by lifting and holding the hose (not fun). That got old and I bought a small 12v macerator pump and never looked back.

Thanks

Thank you jamaddox for reply. I did read the smaller ones are better simply due to the weight the would have to carry has less chance of breaking (handle or wheels, etc)
What size do you have?

Thanks screwby, I forgot about the macerator pump. Should also look into that as well! Good info about it being to tall to create gravity pull.
One negative review I saw on Barker was the drain is on the side instead of the rear making it difficult to pickup one end and completely drain, have you found this to be true?

Please keep them coming

Love my Barker 42...I've had no issues with mine. I used it on my previous TT (28BHBE) and use it currently for my NP. As previously stated, get the pneumatic wheels if possible. I can put it in the back of my truck by myself and just hook it to my ball hitch with a bungee. To answer your last question, when emptying I do have to tilt the unit on it's side to get the remnants out, but haven't had any issues. Good luck with your decision/purchase.

I’ve never had a problem with mine draining, the valve is at the very bottom of the sidewall with a moulded slope to drain completely. I’ve tilted it once or twice to get the last few ounces of liquid when I’m being OCD about it.
The macerator is a game changer. You can use a regular garden hose that hooks to side of pump instead of using big ole dump hose. I made myself a short little 10’ hose for it. It will pump uphill and approximately 100’ away without issue. It turns all that waste, toilet paper and all, into a gross slush that just drains from tote easy as can be. You could even put empty tote in bed of truck, fill with macerator since it pumps uphill. Then drive to dump and use regular dump hose to drain it while never even needing to lift it or pull it.
I use a small garden tractor battery and alligator clips to power the pump since it’s 12v. Makes for a very portable kit I can take with either camper.

Times two on the macerator. Some dump stations are way to far to pull the tote or its over rocks that will damage the plastic wheels. We can lift the tote onto the tailgate and macerate up into the tote. Then just drive to the dump station.

Thanks for all the good feedback

Appreciate everyones comments. I will probably go with the 42 Barker and the macerator pump.
Hope I can ensure I get the pneumatic wheels?

Philip

For those that are utilizing your macerator to fill your tote on the tailgate, do you have any issues with the 'grey' water left in your water hose connected to the macerator? Just curious if you have cut off connections on both ends of your hose connected to the macerator hose and blue tank? I have not tried loading from macerator to tote in truck....but sure like the concept.

A macerated or is like $250 on top of $250 for the barker All said and done your spending $500 on a portable waste solution....seems kind of steep

If you use the macerator to do a final clean-up at home, they recommend a 3/4" garden hose. $30 for a 3/4" x 100' hose from Harbor Freight works well after 3 years pushing up 4 foot rise 100 feet uphill to a clean-out. Cheapest price by far for a hose that diameter.

If you don’t camp much, then yes, a macerator might be a little expensive for your needs. I am a “fulltimer” that also camps a lot and sees a lot of different dump stations or lack thereof. If you need to dump uphill, pump a long ways, fill a tote in your truck bed because you are boondocking, or fill a tote in the bed of your truck because you don’t want to tow a tote half a mile or more away then a macerator rocks.

You can use a garden hose which is dirt cheap and cut it any length you want and have several different lengths for different applications. You can pump into a toilet/outhouse station if allowed. You can pump right into your septic at home. It really opens up the ease of getting rid of waste.

I always shut my campers dump valve and “bump” the activate button a couple of times on macerator to clear hose into tote. You can buy caps at a good hardware store and cap off your hose just like you do a regular “stinky slinky”. I bought out of necessity after my tote was too tall, now I wish I’d had it from beginning.
