50 Amp RV to 30 Amp wired Box at Home

Hello everyone,

I am getting ready to buy a RV that is 50 AMP. At my home I installed a 30 AMP receptacle (cannot remember but I think it is 10 gauge wire) and receptacle because my current RV is 30 AMP. Can I plug the 50 AMP RV into the existing receptacle ? I know I can buy an adapter but that is not what I am worried about. It is the gauge of the wire. I suspect the 10 gauge wire could heat up because 50 AMP requires a different gauge wire. Appreciate any advise you may have. Thanks

If you're 30A outlet has a proper 30A breaker, it won't draw more than 30A. You should be OK. Avoid running too much stuff on your RV like two AC units at the same time.

I temporarily park my class A at my sons house and dogbone it down from a 50a 6 gauge to a 30a and a 30a then down to a 15a. I use a 30a 10 gauge extension along the way. I use it to keep the frig running and batteries charged and if necessary run one AC with a thermostat set to come on and off to keep it cool with no issues. Just make sure you only use one appliance at a time or you will trip the house outlet.

Thanks for the information. My plan is to do the same thing but using only the 50 amp to 30 amp dogbone.

They even make a cord with 50amp female to 30amp male so you don't have to lug the 50amp cord out unless you need it.

I had one of those for my trailer (50A twist-lock) to plug into my generator (standard RV 30A). VERY useful.

Like others have said, watch your draw so you don't throw a breaker. BTDT.

As well as 50 to 20 amp.

Finally broke down last year and bought one of each. The 20 amp is SO convenient for the little Honda IU2000, and the 30 amp extension cord is a LOT lighter than the 50 amp cord when using my 3500 watt generator. Should have bought those adapters a long time ago.

The dog bones are still a must have as well.
