I had a pole-mount PI EMS 30A for 2 years and then a 50A hard-wire for 7 years (so far). I can recall 2 maybe 3 occasions it’s caught a problem but I wouldn’t be without it, just like my TPMS.

You are correct, the surge module can not be replaced on the portable unit. It's a one and done. But the $300+ that you'll spend on it's replacement is a heck of a lot cheaper than repairing/replacing whatever fried in the coach.

The surge module IS replaceable on the hardwired Progressive unit.

We do the same thing.

When Hurricane Ike went through, my sister lost power at her house & was still required to work. They went to a local campground for about 2 weeks, which had intermittent power loss several times. She had a SurgeGuard 30 amp on the pedestal and that saved her unit. She told us that several people didn't and had issues.

That is correct. They will provide a free replacement for so many months.

We have been boaters for 35+ years. last one was a 41' Egg harbor with twin Cat diesels and an 8KW Onan Genny. No need for truck and payload, the damn thing weighed 52K pounds. It had two water source heat/ac units and two staterooms. The galley had a stove and microwave, and a dedicated ice maker. nothing as fancy as the soon to be ours Pinnacle. Never had to worry about fuel for the Genny as it was diesel powered and we had a 500 gallon tank. Only electrical issues when spending a couple of nights away from the marina where when daughter, friend or wife cranked up the hair dryer. They were trained to let me know to shut off the water heater breaker, and all was well. And most marinas had either twin 30's or a single 30 and a 50A connector. We had what we called pigtails, i.e. dogbone adapters, and never heard of a surge suppressor. We visited some minimal places lol, but surge suppressors were not in the boating picture then, heck probably didn't exist. So we are now learning about land yachting similar in many ways yet different, but looking forward to learning.

It's replaceable on the 50a Watchdog also. From what I read on the info with it, it's user replaceable and you can purchase one to have on hand. I have not done that.

I now have two Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X... original one went a little squirrely a couple of weeks ago, so purchased another one for back up...just to check if the original was going bad...seems that it was - had gotten some water in it back in the fall from a torrential rain, so opened it up and dried it out...components didn't look bad, mostly sealed, but must have damaged something... now here in Yosemite area, 104 deg afternoons and on 30 AMPS unfortunately, protector saved us a couple of times when in heat of the day the RVs current draw increased to over 30 amps...have to cycle the AC's manually so they aren't running at same time...even though have the Softstarts on both...have evrything else turned off that I can...but having the EMS helps monitor the current draw...just wish I had something I could monitor from inside the RV...will work on that..

I had a simple problem with the power cord separating from the plug. I filled out the warranty form along with some photos and in six days I had a brand new one sitting on my porch. They did not want the old one returned. They said to cut off the plug and trash it. I repaired it myself.

If you fill out the attached warranty form with a complete description of the problem and the photos they request they will most likely send you a replacement.

One of the reasons I'm considering the hardwired unit, remote display.

I believe that the Hughes Watchdog has an app as well.

It does have the app. I tried it in my shop with Watchdog plugged in the 50A connector and it worked well. Can't vouch for range as I didn't test it.

I have the Hughes Watchdog 50A version that plugs in post. The app works well. Only thing is that that i get messages that it disconnected but that is due to exceeding BT range. Good product, well worth it.

Absolutely get one!
I check every camp pedestal first thing at the site with my eyes for worn or burnt sockets and with my $75 tester/surge protector. Have found several with reversed wiring and other problems. At each I was given a different correctly wired site - one camp had two bad pedestals. A Green River camp with three bad pedestals refunded my money and I stayed at a real nice KOA near by.

If it's the surge protector, then yes, you would have to replace it. If it's the EMS then no. The EMS cuts the power to save your stuff, then restarts when things look good. When you plug a surge protector in, it fires up the power right away, and then sacrifice's itself in the event of a power surge, or drop. It would then need to be replaced. But when you plug the EMS in, it does a diagnostic check of the power system before turning on power. Nice to have.

Definitely need one. I have this one. Recommended by Amazon, easy to read led fault and good indicators.
