50amp protector, works awesome
Surge Guard 34850 Portable 50 Amp RV Surge Protector
saved my butt several times with surge in shore power (137V).
automatically shuts off and retries in 128 seconds.
Expensive but worth it.

Southwire Surge Guard #34951. (50 Amp) #34931 for 30 Amp. Go to www.technorv.com for videos and all the info you need to choose the right one for you. They are total protection (EMS) devices - much more than just surge protection.

Correct me if I am wrong. In my case I have a surge protector. If I were to get an EMS, I would still want to plug the surge protector in ahead of the EMS (portable or hardwired) to protect the EMS from a spike thus saving the EMS.

I concur with what most are saying, I would consider it necessary to protect your trailer. I've been staying at a park with low voltage issues. The surge protector I have will shut off power when volts drop below 104. It can be annoying to have your power cut out, but it's better than risking damage to your appliances.
I have a Progressive Industries 50 Amp Portable RV Electrical Management System Surge Protector. Model EMS-PT50X.

The EMS handles everything. No need for a separate surge protector.

Dump the surge-protector-only device, spend the extra bucks and get the EMS. It'll protect you from surges, high and low power. and everything else you need protecting from. Surge protection only is almost worthless.

I understand that the EMS will protect from surges, but once it saves you from a surge does it recoup from a high voltage surge like it does with low voltage? If it doesn't and the surge protector of the EMS has to be replaced after a high voltage surge, then I would think it would be a benefit having a surge protector that you already own plugged in ahead of the EMS. Thus you wouldn't be without surge protection in case you can't get the EMS repaired in a timely manner.
Just thinking why not use it, if you already have one, rather then not use it or throwing it away.

The EMS device continues to work after each event. They're not a one-event-protection-only device. Some will need to be replaced after many, many events. That's where you need to do some research on your own. A great place to look for the answer to ALL your questions would be www.technorv.com They have a free comprehensive education and video series there that will guide you to get the best one for your needs. Look for "The complete guide to RV surge protection" under "Free info guides."

An EMS has surge protection and will self reset after an "event" when the voltage returns to the acceptable voltage range.
