50 Amp Surge Protector
Looking for recommendations on a 50amp surge protector for our Pinnicle 36SSWS. Also are they necessary ?

Necessary? I say yes. It protects your investment. Progressive Industries is the one I'd recommend. Get either hardwired or plug-in. Worth every penny.

I have been living on the edge for years, as I do not have one.
There are two options a "Surge Protector" and an EMS (Electrical Management System). Surge is just what it says, it helps protects from a spike in power. An EMS, does more. It will monitor your incoming voltage levels. If it is to high or low, it will shut down your power, and try to restart a few minutes later after it verifies it is in the safe range. An EMS gives you a lot more protection.

I have the 50 amp Progressive plug in surge protector, works good, mine didn’t work out of the box, so I contacted them and they sent me a new one (even though I had bought it several months before), they asked a few questions and asked for a pic of the blades (to make sure they weren’t melted I guess) and I was good to go. Great company.

An EMS was the first MOD I did the first week I had my coach. Hughes, Progressive and SurgeGuard all have excellent units. The Hughes has the highest Joule rating and if I were to buy one today that is what I would purchase. (retired electrician)

Agree 100% that they are a necessary investment. I use mine whenever I'm connected to shore power, including at home.
I have the Progressive portable unit and it has been reliable for the past 5 years. If I had it to do over again, I would go with the hardwired unit. The portable units have a 2-1/2 minute delay between power outage/restoration to save the compressor on the air conditioner (only necessary in older units, or A/C units without a delay cycle). The hardwired unit can be programmed for a shorter cycle time.
The people with Hughes units love them, same with the people who have the Southwire units. I don't think that you can go wrong choosing between any of the 3.

A must have! Saved my bacon on at least 5 different occasions. We stay at approximately 25 different campgrounds every year so we get a variety of situations.

Totally agree. Not sure about this but, I hear if you fry one, they'll rebuild it for shipping only. Don't hold me to that.

When mine (Progressive) developed a power cord problem I contacted them and had a brand new one on my porch 6 days, plus they didn't want the old one back...said to cut the connector off and trash it. Fixed it myself and now have a spare.

We have a Progressive hardwired. It was an easy installation right behind the electric panel in hallway, which placed the unit in dead space under bathroom sink.
It seems to work fine, and has cut our power briefly a few times for low voltage.
However, if it goes out, I think we'll get the pedestal version to replace it, for reasons stated by others above.

I have RV'd for ~40 years now and never had one and never had any issues. However, I did purchase one not too long ago, the Progressive hard wired version that I need to install (amongst other upgrades) so it is not that I don't think they have any value... Similar to my fire extinguishers, never needed one yet, but I recently inspected them (2 in my RV) and I checked the gauge on them. My recommendation is that it is better to have one, but I wouldn't cancel in travel plans for not having one. ~CA

Thanks everyone. I just got this one on Amazon. Will be at my home Tomorrow.
I stay at a lot of Thousand Trails properties and while some are very good others are questionable. Now if I can figure out how to secure it to the pole with the cable and lock I bought with it.

Watchdog 50amp for me. Its made by the same people that make the Autoformer (which I also have).

50 amp Progressive EMS. I really like the features on the Watchdog and may get one just as a backup to my Progressive. My understanding from previous posts is that the surge module on the Progressive is not replaceable which means if it protects from a surge you have to replace the entire unit. If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be corrected
