50amp to 30amp dogleg adapter

Do I need to have on hand a 50-30 amp dogbone for a 50amp TH? I used it with a 30amp TT we had.

thanks.

50m to 30f dogbone for a 50 amp rig shouldn’t be needed. Having a 30amp m to 50amp f would be good to have in case you can only find 30amp service.

Depends on where you go. If there's a chance you hit a place with only 30A pedestal available, you'll wish you had the 50 to 30 adapter. They're getting more and more rare, but they still exist out in the world.

I carried one in my 50A equipped TT, just in case. Example: at my dad's deer lease, they put in 30A plugs for the hunters' campers. Having the adapter allowed me to plug in. Being able to adapt all the way down to 15/20A was helpful out there too. Sometimes (since I didn't have a dedicated space) the only place to plug in was the "skinning rack", which was a 20A plug. Didn't matter much in the winter when the most power I needed was for the coffee maker...

I would keep one on hand. It'll be a pain in the butt if you need it and don't have it.

You really need to carry a 50A to 30A Adapter that is wired as such...

Google image...

This has the two 50A legs tied together so that all of your circuits will get 120VAC... Then it will be up to you to turn off things that might trip the pedestal breaker...

Hi: So the end that plugs into the campground pole is the 3 prong 30amp and the other end has the 4 prong 50 amp?

I was so confused I ordered a 50 to 30 and 30 to 50.
Thanks

Hi: What do you mean 2 legs tied together? Do I have to buy a 50 amp plug adapter and plug that into 50amp On the 50/30 dog bone?
Thanks

That's correct.

No, there's nothing additional needed. What he meant, was that both the left and right side socket terminals on the female side of the dog bone are hot. Some of the cheapy ones, only put power to one of those terminals.

If you look at Roy's top image, the lower portion is the 50 amp female side. Look at the 'black' lines, those are the hot terminals, and you want power to both of those from the 30 amp male side of the dog bone. The green line is ground, and the white line is the neutral. I hope this makes sense to you. If not, just ask.

I would not get rid of it. I carry a small box of different adapters.

I have a 50 to 30 amp plug in for my trailer that is a 30amp trailer. I bought it when I was at a campground that kept tripping the 30 amp circuit. they had 30 and 50 amp service so I bought the converter and plugged into 50 amp had no problems all weekend. In my opinion you can't have to many of them.

I am with you on this one...

I haul all of the old adapters we no longer use with us still... I have lost count of the times we have loaned out an old adapter that we have not used in years to someone new that goes camping with us... Some we get back, some we don't.

I’ve used a 50 to 30 several times when on a generator. Both my generators only have a 30amp camper outlet so I need the adapter to run my 5th wheel on them.

I also carry the old ones I no longer need. You can make someone that is having a bad weekend because they do not have the proper plug to new camping friends.

My grandmother use to carry a handbag the size of a laundry hamper so she'd have all the things "someone else might need". Unless you want to become your grandmother, I'd get rid of it. You might find someone willing to swap you a 30X50 for your 50X30 if you advertise it in our "For Sale" section.

That's how I used mine for a long time.

Then I found an adapter that was integrated into a 50 ft cord. I could plug one end into the 50A twistlock on the side of my camper, and the other into the 30A on my generator. It was beautiful. Just like a 50 ft dogbone adapter.

I guess I got the name of the adapter backwards above... This is a 30A to 50A adaptor. 30A plugs into the 30A Pedestal socket and your 50A Trailer plugs into the long adaptor. Sorry for the confusion.. The big point was you need to power up both 120VAC legs in your 50AMP Power Distribution panel. Otherwise only half of your 120VAC service will be usable...

I try to have everything I need when on the road... Nothing worse showing up at a camp and forget something. A lot of camp grounds carry some of these adapters that helps... I read on here down the page that one user brought up the generator that only has 30A socket. You will need this to plug in your generator if that is the case... great point...

In my case I have my closed and secure truck along with my POPUP trailer 5x8 front deck… Gives me plenty of room for all these things hehe...

I usually pretty heavy loaded down on my trips haha..

so you have a 30 to 50 and a 50 to 30 plugged together then you'd plug the 30 female into a 30amp campground stool?

i forgot to ask - our new 5th wheel will have a 5500 onan generator. since we never glapmped with one before, what is the generator used for and would we plug into the 30 amp campgrd electrical stool and run the generator for extra electricity? Would all three of our A/C units work while 5er plugged into a 30 amp stool?
many thanks to you and others for helping us out.

If your generator is built-in, then you have a transfer switch that will determine which source of power gets fed to your 120V panel. The transfer switches are generally wired to "prefer" the generator AFAIK (that's how it is in my rig). So if I plug into the pedestal at the CG and my generator is running, the power will still come from my generator until the generator is turned off. Then power will come from the pedestal.

Whether you can run how many AC units on 30A depends on what else is running and the size of your units. It is HIGHLY unlikely you'd be able to run all 3 on 30A, but 2 is probably possible with proper power management (like running your fridge and water heater on gas, etc.) I have one 11K unit and one high efficiency 13.5K unit. Both running at the same time on high-cool will draw around 22A with just my converter running in addition. My water heater alone will draw 11A on electric, so I tend to switch it to gas if I need both AC units running.

Perhaps I can help to clarify things.

Remember: A receptacle is female, a plug is male. You see receptacles in the walls of your house--those are not plugs. The plug is on the end of your toaster cord. A simple household extension cord has a plug on one end and a receptacle on the other.

If you want to use your 50A camper plug on a pedestal that has only a 30A receptacle you need to buy a dog bone that has a 30A plug on one end and a 50A receptacle on the other.

30A to 50A vs 50A to 30A can get confusing because it kind of depends which way you look at it. Look at the dog bone itself or the pictures to make sure you're going in the right direction.
