6 years old truck spare tire

When I purchased my truck, F350 SRW, it came with 2 spare tires. One was mounted underneath and one in the bed, the date code is 4918. Both tires are unused and look new. I need new tires. Buying two Goodyears cost $300+ each total. I could save $600+ if I buy only two and put both spares on the truck. Most recommendations are to replace tires at 6 to ten years regardless of use. My rear tires seem to wear faster so I would purchase two new tires and put them on the front. In a few years put new 2 new tires on the rear as they would wear faster anyway. One spare is still mounted under the truck the other was kept indoors in my garage. Who thinks this is a bad idea?

I wouldn't run tires of that age while towing. Maybe use them as a spare for enough time to get to a tire shop, but not ecvery day use or towing.

You could start putting both spares into rotation every time you rotate the on-vehicle set. It may wear your spare down but you'll get even wear out of 6 tires that way.
I get not doing it if the wheels do not match the ones on the truck though.

I'd buy

But by doing this you'll also avbe to buy 8 new tires at once and as mentioned, at $300 (or more later on) that is a lot to do.

I’ll be putting on my snow tires soon so I will start researching new tires. I will be buying 4 new tires in the Spring. On the Goodyear website they recommend replacing tires at 6 years regardless of tread wear. On the Michelin website they say 10 years regardless of tread wear. I will be buying Michelin for sure.

How dead is dead? Six years is on the edge or over the limit that most manufacturers recommend and 10 is way over. Is your safety and that of anyone riding in your vehicle worth $600 or $1200 for that matter. Trying to save a few bucks at the risk of a blow out or two blow outs and the damage and injury that could follow is really not worth it in my mind.

There are some threads here about the age on tires and in a couple of them one of the members who is an expert on tires gives his views. Worth finding and reading.

I’m going to put a new set of Michelin tires on my truck. The Michelin website recommends replacing tires before ten years. Goodyear website recommends replacing tires before six years. I like ten better than six. I would feel better with 8 year old Michelins than 7 year old Goodyears based on their company recommendations.
