A Deep Philosophical Question of Great Import

I had one of those state maps on the back of the TT that I just traded in.
About 1/2 the U.S. States were filled in.
I just traded for a new 5er.

I've personally been camping in all of the states of the union, almost all the provinces and a few states in Mexico.
My wife has been camping (with me and before we met) in about 1/2 the states in the Union and a few provinces.
Together we have camped in about 1/2 the states (the ones filled in on the TT we traded.)
Our new rig has only been in 2 states.

So here's the critical question.

What states do you put on your map? Either the map on your rig - or the map under your Forum signature (Where do you get those by the way?)

1) Just the states the Rig it's attached to has visited (ie driven through)?
2) Only states the Rig it's attached to has spent the night in?
3) States any member of your family has camped in?
4) Some other scheme.

Frankly, I think the National Transportation Administration or some other Government agency should set a standard here - after all, we can't have different RVers using different standards. And we all know we need more government intervention in our lives.

One point you didn't mention...

What happens when you've filled in a map? You don't remove it, do you? Do you add a second map and start to fill in that one?

Oldman - I think you just keep putting state stickers on top of each state that you revisit. That way the map becomes sort of 3 dimensional.

Perhaps the bigger question is . . . . if we sell or trade in our old RV are should we be required to remove/destroy the old may so new owners can't take credit for our travels.

Huh, this actually made me think a bit. I think the answer is somewhere between #1 and #2. If you spent the night in a state then for sure that should go on your map. If you only drove through a state without stopping to see or do something (gas and food, unless the food is specially related to the area, don't count) then you can't put it on your map. For example, stop for gas and McDonald's and that does not count as a visit. Stop and visit a historical landmark, or a park, or eat at a locally owned restaurant, that's a valid visit even if you don't spend the night. I also feel a map belongs to the trailer, new trailer new map.

Of course with the electronic version of the map, it would take LOTS of layers before the 3-D effect would be noticeable.

We only put the states that we've spent the night in on the map. We debated whether or not to start over when we got the Eagle, but decided that if we did that we'd have a pretty bare map for a long time so we're "transferring" it from the WH

The original versions sold were "States we've visited".

So we've always based it on where "we've been and camped" not just the rig.

I think the stickers belong to the attached buggy (not the owners) and therefore can't be transferred to any other item. If you desire to keep them then apply them to your body.

This buggy need not spend an over-nighter to qualify for the sticker, if it travels within a state it gets that state sticker.

Personally I prefer to travel unadorned; that includes no bumper stickers and no stick children in the rear window. It should be noted that here in the deep south NOT having an NRA sticker is a grievous oversight.

Only states you've STAYED in. And yes, you have to start over. The new 5'er is a virgin and must be broken in! 8)

It is a personal thing.. do you want to show where you have been camping or where your camper has been? You decide.. I get a kick out of the fact they always include an Hawaii sticker in the pack...

I went with States I've visited / stayed overnight in. If I only listed states I've used my camper in the map would be pointless for me. (this also explains why I have Hawaii colored in lol)

For us, its places we have camped as a family (spending at least 1 night). We moved the sticker from our old RV to our new, but if we couldn't we would have put a new one up and prefilled our states from the last one.
