A Gas Can That Doesn't Suck

I used the search function but didn't find anything. Anyone have any real world experience with a 5 gallon gas can that doesn't leak or is a PITA to deal with? I bought one from Costco for my generator but with the new "safety" features it leaks more gas than if I had a regular old style can. Reviews online seem to be hit or miss. thanks for any recommendations.

I have a mix of plastic and metal ones. I much prefer the metal cans with the funnel attached to spout.

I one similar to this one:

In some cases the filler cap from an old red can will match up threads with the new compliant cans. I have gotten this to work on a couple of the new cans. You can also buy replacement spouts/caps at tractor supply. They are sold as replacement for water cans as it is illegal to sell them for gas cans but they do work.

The problem with using replacement caps is that the new cans do not have vents and that makes it difficult to use and forever to dump 5 gallons. Best result I've seen is to drill a hole in the top opposite the spicket and then use a wire to fish a standard tire valve thru the cap opening and stick it up thru the undersized hole you drilled. Grab the valve that is sticking thru the hole and pull it into place just like in a tire rim. Remove the core and screw on the valve cap. Remove the valve cap when you are pouring the gas and you're back in

Gas cans leak. Get used to it.

I've been handling regular, premium, Diesel and 2-stroke mix for decades.

Best I found so far (but are now illegal) had a single large threaded hole. The 1 piece spout had a built-in vent that was far from perfect. It would draw some fuel back into the can along with the air. Call it a forerunner to the auto-locking POS on the market now.

Hopefully, the Nanny State will come to it's senses and allow production and sale of nozzles that are more reliable.

You can use your old can just get a 'New old style' Spout from this site. They work much better than the California compliant spouts. Just check which Gas can you have & order replacement

You can order even if you live in that '' , just order the 'Water Spout'

x2 on this... I bought the kit a couple years ago... Have to drill a hole in the can to fit the "old style" vent... Works great.

I bought one of the new 5 gal plastic cans and tried to fill my truck up with it but found it impossible to activate the release. I threw away the safety spout and tried to use an old spout but the threads are different...ugh.

You mean the new latest and greatest gas can. I spill more gas with these POS than I can ever vent by an old style. Just another Gov let's make it better.

I thought a moderator would have stopped this nonsense by now. I love this forum because there are usually no politics here.

Let's PLEASE keep politics out of this..

Thank you.

Yeah, these new gas cans are frustrating. Trying to hold the spring loaded nozzle in, and get it into the chainsaw/lawnmower etc, without spilling it all over.

Then, the 5 gallon ones for the tractor, backhoe, takes forever while it slowly slurps in. I still have a couple the old style with vent, and it sure is easier/faster to use.

I picked up a couple old style small ones at garage sales to replace my new ones.

So, check out garage sales, and flea marts, and get an old one.

Ok so u edited my post. So let me be politically correct. I work for the DHS as an Environmental Protection Specialist and yes this was an EPA change under OBAMA. This was done to keep fumes from getting into the air under his EPA rules. So all of u who love this great idea now know where it came from.

I have a pair of these (thanks to the theft of my earlier lousy plastic cans): https://www.lowes.com/pd/Eagle-5-Gal...ne-Can/1136093

While they were expensive I've been pleased with them for the past 6 years.

I've posted this before - coming up on one year with no leaks and no smell. Fills the generator without need to tip it over.

I have the new style Midwest 5 gal cans. I bought a couple of the Ez Pour replacement kits and one of the hi flo kits. They work great!!!

I had already added vents to the cans, bought from Summit racing. I drilled a 1/4" hole, then used a step drill bit that maxed at 1/2". The vents popped right in.

No pic with the spout, but so far very happy with the kits. Fills the sleds up quickly at the end of the day riding up in Canada!!! In fact when using the Hi Flo spout the vent actually whistles a little from the air flowing through it so quickly. Lol

If you don't get the spout seated right in the collar they can leak, but that would be the same with any type of can.
