We were not prepared... Or I was not ready. This is supposed to be a well traveled trail. NOT. We were about 4 miles past the well traveled part. High centered.
And sinking.
Jesus was looking out and gave us a phone signal. We had no bear spray..skitter spray ..shovel.. Digger ..enough tow strap ..emergency blankets..tarp...gun..extra cloths or enough for a cold night..medicine..water.. Food...jack...winch.. Binoculars.. Rain suit.., nothing . I was expecting to see lots other riders.
We were scared crapless worried about bears. I built a fire at least.
About 30 min before we were rescued I spotted two wheelers about a miles out in the tundra bush whacking. I put Gloria Sherrill white jacket on stick and waved and we hollered and hollered. They saw us and headed our way. Took about 30 to 45 min for them to reach us. We hooked up to both the wheelers with winch...they could not pull us out. State Troopers had contacted local tour group and they showed up about this time...thanks Jesus...it took two jeeps jerking to pull us out and this was as far as the jeeps could go. Any further and we would have to leave wheeler. We were really scared at about 2.. I saw something about a mile out moving slowly .. Head up then down .. Like a bear.. Watched and watched. About an hour later after thinking the worse I could see orange..finally I released it was a hiker from Europe had been back to the bus..was we relieved. Did not speak English very good but understood we needed help and would tell someone when he got to Healy. We past him on the way out. Offered ride said no. He won't get to Healy until today.
I tried all day to get us unstuck.
It was scary simply because of the Grizzly bears.

Ustabslim, waiting to hear the details. As it sounds, I am glad everything seemed to have worked out ok.
I hope you had appropriate supplies with you in the event of something like this. Alaska backcountry can be more unforgiving than most places.

Thanks for the update. I am glad everything worked out.
I hope you will take along provisions for your next adventure. While bears deserve their due caution, don't forget the moose. They kill more people here than bears do. Young moose will actually approach humans out of curiosity and upon decided they are scared or the human is a threat will attack by trampling and kicking.

We could have stayed in the wheeler with the doors zipped up and kept away from the moose. We would have frozen as our legs would be under water all night. I attempted to walk out at one point but realized after crossing second stream I would have hypothermia before long as I would actually have to stay in the steam 50 percent of the time plus BEARS and moose so i went back. Didn't like leaving wife either. We had none of our medicines or water. I was a dumbass.

Headed to Anchorage on train from Denali at noon. About 8 hour train ride. Spend the night in Anchorage with 4 hour shower...then back on train tomorrow.

I hope all else goes well with your trip. Over the next two weeks I have a lot of family flying in. We may end up heading north with our rig to see sites at Denali or we may head south to Seward and take everyone to the cabin.
If I can provide any assistance, shoot me a PM. I usually check my email every other day.

Since we only had two small bottles of water I got really dehydrated sweating trying to get us out I had horrible cramping when we got back. Two bottles of tonic water fixed it.

Boy thats some sink hole! Thats my fear.Being by myself on 4 wheeler or dual sport bike in the middle of nowhere and either breaking down or getting stuck or whatever and no phone signal. I'm heading out there next week by myself as usual. I guess a winch and or a sat phone would have been handy there. Been thinking of renting a sat phone for the trip. Thinking even harder about it now. Well, glad it didnt get as bad as it could have for you. Good luck with the rest of the trip.
