Another F150 SCrew Question

Looking at a reasonably priced F150 but it has 3.31 gears with the ECO-Boost V6.

Brochure states it will pull 8100 lbs. worth of trailer, which is perfect for the White Hawk 20MRB with a GVW of 5950.

I know the 3.31 gears will give great mileage without the trailer but does the 3.5 GTDI V6 still have plenty of ooomph with those gears?

Thanks in advance,

Murff

With those gears, it doesn't sound like it has the "Max" tow package (if it has a tow package at all). Check the payload as well (yellow sticker in door) as the tongue weight of the TT will come off that.

The engine has alot of power, but the rest of the truck needs to be equipped to tow.

Derek,

The dealer has the original window sticker in their ad. States a 7200 GVWR Package and the $600.00 Trailer Tow Package. So, I assume she is ready to tow?

You will be just fine. The ecoboost has a plethora of power and since your trailer GVW is just under 6k, the 3.31 gears won't hurt you

The difference between 3.31's and 3.73's isn't a deal breaker. You'll have no problems with that truck towing your White Hawk. It'll perform better than you think. All Ford F Series trucks were built for towing, regardless of ratio. It's true that the other ratios have better "low end torque" but with a trailer of that weight, it won't matter much. Yeah, 3.73's would be ideal but the 3.31's won't disappoint. I'd say as long as you're not towing 24-7 365, you'll be fine.

I tow a 28BHBE with basically the same truck (2016 XLT) and loaded I weigh in right around 7200 lbs. The 3.31's are not the greatest ratio but the only place I seem to have any real issues is on long steep grades and even they are not a show stopper.

I have a 2003 payload capacity according to my door sticker and we do load pretty lightly. I use an equalizer WD Hitch and I installed the Roadmaster Active Suspension.

I have that truck, different year but otherwise the same (including 3.31), and a trailer that is roughly the same size as yours. It pulls easily, up and over mountain passes with plenty of power to spare.

Have you looked at the yellow sticker for the payload? The 3.31 won't have the max tow package which gives about another 400 pounds of payload. The 3.31 Screws we looked at had around 1100 pounds payload (we were looking at Platinum models though) which after subtracting tongue weight, you could be left with as little as 200 pounds of payload. Possibly as much as 350#. That may mean just a driver and no cargo in the truck, or a driver ans passenger and no cargo. Or worst case, 200# of payload and a driver over 200#...
