Anyone familiar with New Mexico?

We are taking the travel trailer to New Mexico. Being from Houston I have limited experience on snow/ice. We will spend the night in Carlsbad, then on to Angel Fire or Alamagorda (still deciding). Any particular routes that are better or worse than others in terms of grade and maintenance?

I do not think you will really notice much in elevation changes until you get to the Enchanted circle itself. Carson National Forest in winter is beautiful. Vermejo Park is now private but the wildlife is spectacular. Fishing is always good in Angel Fire. Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is something to see if you are a Texan. It is all beautiful. I was born in Alburquerque.

Whew! If you are traveling to NM in the next few days, IMHO stay in Houston. There is a storm coming in this weekend that looks like a doozy. Traveling to Angel Fire might be better in the summer cause it is in the mountains and the weather could be horrible in winter. Alamagordo is not northern so the winter weather is considerably milder. You could park in Alamagordo and visit surrounding areas.
Good luck and enjoy but be careful.....you don't even want to pull your TT thru snowy or icey roads. No fun - been there, done that.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

Thanks for the replies. We will not actually be heading up to Angelfire until Tuesday. The point is to find snow, we're going on a ski trip. My wife already has most of the trip planned out. I think we have one day in Carlsbad seeing a couple things there and staying overnight. Then we head on up to Angel Fire and ski for two days. I talked to the New Mexico highway department, they suggested going up through Cimarron on interstate 25. they said they usually do a pretty good job of keeping that Pass maintained. Going to make sure that our driving is during daylight hours and stay off the roads at night

You will want to stay south on I10 as northern NM gets plenty of snow. Alamogordo should be clear but there will be LOTS of snow at Angle Fire it's a ski resort and open. NM does not deal well with snow and has little removal equipment. There is snow predicted for the week end on 10 (El Paso and Las Cruces) 54 North from El Paso will keep you as far from the white stuff s you get here. Merry Christmas and safe travel
PM me if you want more info I live in S. NM

We will overnight in Abiline, then in Carlsbad. From there (Wednesday when we leave Carlsbad). Up 285/84 to Las Vegas, pick I-25 and go through Cimmarron (58?) To Eagle Nest to Angle Fire. I spoke the folks at Angel Fire, and they told me during the day Eagle Nest is pretty well kept. State hwy dept said I-25 is well kept in that area. Unless there is another storm behind this one, looks like we'll be ok. From Cimmarron into Angel Fire may be slow going, just gonna take it easy.
