Asking for members help

Due to various reasons we will be short staffed here at JOF for a few months and will not be able to screen all posts and threads. So I`m asking for help from our members. If you see any of the following, click on the "notify moderator" in the lower left corner of each post. Help keep our forum unique, friendly and informative.

Thank you,
Crabman

Spammers. New forum spam defense has just about eliminated spam intruders, but occasionally one gets through. They are quickly banned after detection.

Threads or posts that clearly break forum rules. http://www.jaycoowners.com/misc.php?do=vsarules

Posts that are becoming argumentative in nature. 99 44/100% of our members seem to like that we do not put up with that here, so let`s keep it that way.

NOTE
*Not all posts that are reported will be deleted or edited. That`s a judgment call by the moderator. The world of moderation and our rules can be grey, not just black and white.

I've yet to figure out who was the brilliant person that named this storm Pax. In Latin, Pax means "peace" and this (or any) storm is anything but peaceful.

When things get back to normal again, I'd put in for a raise, Crabman, or at least a promotion from Super to Chief Moderator. Sounds like you were left "holding the bag" as we would say up here in PA. I'll keep an eye out for trouble. Some of those spammers seem to be getting a little more clever in hiding their true purpose when they post.

Exclamation See a Questionable or Inappropriate Post or Thread? Click the Report Post Icon

Sorry that some of us who moderate have been MIA. On my end, family emergencies popped up in the last couple of months. And now DH and I are taking off for South America! We will be gone until mid-April.

As Crabman mentioned, we really appreciate when members click on the "report post" icon (little exclamation point in a triangle below each post on the left of the box). Besides the occasional spammers, members have been good about reporting when an irate post shows up (which ensues into an argument), flamer lights up, off-topic comments, hijacking, dissing an individual, etc etc that can affect the integrity of a post or thread. Member's reporting these posts make if much easier for problems to be averted before it becomes out of hand. Members who take the time to "report" questionable posts/threads are what helps to keep JOF a family friendly and supportive forum to newbie rv'ers and veterans alike.

Thanks again! And 'see you' all in April

You might be a spammer if...
  • You're a new member and have very few postings. NOTE- You can't determine a spammer on this criteria alone because everyone starts out as a new member. You must also meet a number of other signs listed below.
  • The majority (or all) your postings tend to be brief and contain links taking you to their business website.
  • Often times there is no signature defined.
  • When you look at their member information, it's generally void or has very limited personal and/or RV facts listed.
  • In their postings, there's rarely, if ever, anything personal said about themselves- it's all business.
  • You're not an RVer in real life. This is difficult to determine, but sometimes can be learned by what they say in their postings.
  • Answers in their postings frequently don't relate to the topic being discussed because they're really an advertisement in disguise.

I'm sure there are other signs besides these that others can post here to further educate the membership on the "fine art" of identifying spammers.

Might as well make my 50th post be a thank you to the mods here. This is by far the most helpful, peaceful, flam-less board I belong to.
