Do you have more details in regards to which awning you have, and perhaps your RV make. model, year?
On mine, the manual states how to get to the motor and how test it with a 12v battery, which is also how they say to retract it in an emergency (direct battery connection to the motor). Again on mine as yours could be different, you take off the awning cover closest to the front of the RV and the motor is there under the cover along with the wires that you could attach a battery to (you have to disconnect them from where the are connected if I remember correctly). From what I gather, the switch and controller (if it has one) fails more often than the motor. ~CA
