Angry Awning help PLEASE!!!!

Pulled awning out to clean it before we take it to the lake. left it open to dry. It pulled out fine. I went to roll it back up today & it would not roll up. Rolled it up by hand. Now, it will not pull out! Is there something I can/need to reset? Am I missing something? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Grab a ladder and check the lever at the top right of the tube. Is it fully set in either open or close? I know mine can be problematic when it hasn't rotated to one or the other fully.

Well, typically the lever on the awning arm should get it to go. I've noticed mine sticks on occasion and I really hate horsing it because it's plastic. On occasion, when the awning is extended, I have resorted to manipulating the lever arm at the tube. I have never had the situation you have. It seems you are stuck between the two modes and need to get it to one side or the other (you said you had to manually roll it up, which would indicate to me you never got the lever completely to the closed position)

I would first go to the closed side and see if you can get the lever to engage. Once you're there, go the other way. You might want to have a helper when you are on the ladder to manipulate the lever on the arm while you're doing this.

I have no idea if there are any lubrication points on these things. Anyone?

Not sure of the model or brand Jayco uses with the manual awnings, but on my last TT the gray lever on the tube would need to be pulled toward me to release the tension and start the roll back process. I would almost always need someone to hold the black strap to relieve some tension and then help it retract smoothly. I was afraid of that lever breaking off every time I put the pull bar to it.

Try turning the awning tube with one hand in whatever direction it takes to relieve the tension while you try to move the directional lever with the other. The situation you describe is similar to when you've put your vehicle in park while on a grade before (or not) setting the parking brake. This problem can be especially annoying if the awning is in the rolled up position as you'll need a ladder to reach it. If you're at a campsite and don't have a ladder, move the end of a picnic table against the side of your TT and stand on it. Just be careful to keep your feet positioned over the legs of the picnic table so it doesn't tip.

I have a Carefree of Colorado awning and often had the problem you described. When one of the springs broke about 3-4 years ago, rather than replace it, I was able to purchase a kit that replaces the entire spring-type rollup mechanism with one that uses the old crank style like you see used on store front awnings. The conversion was worth every penny and eliminates all the problems associated with the spring-type and I've enjoyed trouble-free operation ever since.

At this point, it might be worthwhile if you at least tell us what make of awning it is (almost all are either A&E or Carefree of Colorado) as it might make a difference in how to go about resolving your dilemma.

Where would I find out what kind I have? It's a 2007 Jay Feather Sport 197. Never got an owners manual.

Look around on the arms and see if there's a label somewhere.

Mine is a carefree, 2007 and the label is displayed on the arm.
