Awning stability in the wind...

Put our awning out for first time the other day with a slight breeze. It did not seem stable at all, was concerned it would get damaged and put it back up. Noticed there are a couple accessories available, awning stablizer straps ($18) and a "deflapper" which includes hooks to strap the awning to the arms ($15). Anyone have any experience with these? Worth the money? or have any alternative suggestions, might just use some rope and something for a good ground anchor. Of course wouldn't mind spending the money if it saves me from buying a new awning. Just thinking there may be something else that works just as well

did you buy the TT new? If so, it should have come with a tie-down strap.

I roll mine up just to be on the safe side and if I leave for any length of time I do the same. I kind of follow what others do in the camp ground, they have much more experience than I. I sail from time to time and that wind can take that awning right over the TT in a New York minute.

We tie it down while setting up, just as a precaution. Bought a package of orange ratchet straps (4 for 10.00) at the local tool store. Loop around ends of awning roller and a couple of those nail type stakes and your good. Peace of mind, but still have to watch out for serious weather.

I would not suggest leaving your awning out when your not present, be it day or night. We lost one in the campground on Monday when a brief but strong thunderstorm rolled through. All we can do is suggest, can't fix stupid.

We have these awning deflappers. They work great, but all they are really for is keeping the awning quiet when it's windy. We've never used our tie downs, they tend to just get in our way.

Knowing when to pull the awning in is a matter of knowing what the weather is like and where you are. There are some places that are prone to high winds and quick storms. We leave our awning out 95% of the time.

Three years ago, on our second trip out with our 2004 Jayco Feather 23B, we came back from 4th of July fireworks. A storm rolled in and a few gusts of breeze started shaking the trailer. I went out to roll up the awning but was too late, just as I was about to, it ripped one of the bars off. Got it fixed. Now I always have deflappers and will often tie it down as we generally try to camp near lakes, so we can get some breezes. If it looks stormy, I'll generally roll it up now.

This is what I used last night for my popup awning. sideways chick block tied to bottom of awning pole. Sustained the ocean winds perfectly. Click image for larger version

First few years we wintered in south Texas and once set up we always left our awning out . I used a thing called the claw it's used to tie airplanes down with worked really well along with the de flappers. I now have a automatic awning and it just doesn't look strong enough so we never leave it out unattended

When we had our last TT we had a manual awning and the deflappers worked great. Now have an electric awning and can't use them any more.

I made 2 tie down stands for our electric awning that was in the mod section. We have been here in the White Mountains of Az and have some real strong winds with rain and our awning has not ever moved. Was not to keen on tying it down but so far so good.
