Awning Suggestions

Without going into great detail, but due to a "bonehead" my 20ft awing was destroyed by the weather. (pooling) It snapped the arms. All I could do was remove the awning and leave it at the dumpster. I now need to replace it. I am looking for awning suggestions. You input is appreciated.

Will your insurance cover it? Maybe you can get them to pay the price for replacement of the original but then you pay the difference for a better one your self. The Carefree Traveler model is a much better unit IMO. We had them on previous 5er's and never had a problem with them. Also, I see there is a new brand advertised in various mags and maybe it is a better unit. Can't remember the brand name right now.

Was it a power awning? If my power awning ever gets trashed I'd seriously consider replacing with a manual awning. They are much more sturdy than the flimsy power ones.

The A&E / Dometic 9100 has done us good, but I'm with jloco, I prefer the manual ones.

I have the Dometic 9100 as well. As electric awnings go, it's been fine.

I'd go with an electric awning with wind sensor.

Fingerlakes, I've never thought of the insurance idea. I will check that out. The worst they can say is NO. I wish I has taken photos. The may want proof.

The awning I had was a Carefree Traveler electric awning. I had been rolling it in every night in case of wind but forgot on the night it rained. I did not expect it to rain that night.

After it happened, I was visiting with a neighbor camper. He showed me feature his awning had to "tilt" it to prevent pooling during rain. No little buttons to push while trying to extend the arm. One just pulls down on the arm one wants lower. Each arm has a "gas piston" that holds it in place. Once set, the piston holds it until one repositions it. However, it did look flimsy. I did not get the brand name.

Dometic 9100 tilts on it's own. I've been there with a total loss awning due to rain before. It was a manual back then and was my own fault. Broke almost everything. Insurance covered all of it for me.

My feelings are the same.

My last unit I kept mine on a big angle to keep the rain from pooling. I was not there but rain came and my neighbor said he never seen it rain that hard before. Mine still pooled and stretched the material but thankfully that was it. It took two of us to get the water out. The only reason it did not break I had support poles and tie downs in place. Still cannot believe with the angle it had that happened. A wind/rain sensor would be nice to have

The new brand that I have seen but couldn't remember in my prev. post is Solera. They look good in their ads and extend a little further out than the others. May be worth a look. We had Travlers on our previous 5ers and they would automatically dump when it was raining. They worked pretty good and never gave us a problem but the Longitudes that are on our Pinnacle are JUNK!

Not super impressed with the Carefree awnings.

Carefree's scissor arms pretty much suck and are very flimsy. The Dometic awning arms are simple with less going on. Dometic has had its issues in the past (awning motor recalls), but to me they remain superior in the awning category.
