Axle problem

Advice needed please. We had a wheel bearing failure and now we are being told that our brake drum needs to be replaced, along with the axle. We have not been told, yet, what damage has been done to axle. Anyone able to look at these pictures and provide some insight. Thanks in advance

How old is the unit? How may miles on it? How many miles since the last bearing packing/replacement? Too many questions to come up with a solution for you. Bearings do not live forever and if they are not checked and repacked within a reasonable time and mileage they fail. Just sitting causes the grease to harden and the bearing to fail.

It looks like the axle spindle suffered some damage caused by the bearing blowing up.

Unless you are an incredible welder, a new axle is required. Pending on the axle they start about $200.

From the pictures is hard to tell about the brakes. The parts are fairly cheap. Your paying for the labor.

If the axle spindle have been overheated axle has to be replaced as spindles are not for sale. For safety replace the axle.

It looks like the bearing was dry or got hot enough to burn it off. Looking at the bearing(or what's left of it), the drum probably took damage where the bearing rides inside. Without better/more pictures or viewing directly, I'm sorry to say I would have to agree on the diagnosis.

Things happen, I had a similar failure even after repacking. On mine all I can figure is it was the bearing just broke! No over heating, I check at every stop. Pulled out of camp ground and not 20 minutes later, speeds under 50mph, I was flagged by following car I had problem.
My remnants looked like yours only wet with grease! Ended up replacing axel.

Very few even mess with replacing parts in those brakes. You can purchase the whole brake assembly with all new shoes and hardware for around $90 bucks per wheel. 4 bolts and the brake wires and you are done.

I agree with the other posters your axle is damaged and should be replaced.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all the replies. We will be replacing the axel, but we now have better piece of mind because of all your responses.
