Battery

So I bought a fixer upper and the trailer/battery wires apparently charred in half. Put a new plug on and had trailer lights and breaks. I’m sure the battery is toast but how do you wire it to the trailer? I’m assuming that one of these wires goes on the aux on the 7 way plug and the other on the ground, but not sure. I’m also assuming that it would be a good idea to add some fuses near the battery so this doesn’t happen again. Any ideas?

The first thing you want to isolate is what caused the short that melted your cables!!!!

The last thing you want to do is hook up the TV to the unknown!!!!

Start one wire at a time. Making sure there is no short on any of them.

Did you install a 30 amp fuse between the battery and the TT? Do not continue until you install it.

The 7 wire cable should terminate in a 4x4 electrical box. The FUSED lead from the battery will connect to the charging lead from the TV and the cable supplying power to the TT, inside the 4x4 electrical box which is more than likely mounted on the frame.

Good Luck!!!

You did not post your exact model and year Jayco. If you do someone might have the wiring diagram for that model.

You might also be able to get it from a local dealer or from Jayco direct.

I agree with the above. Don't do anything without a fuse!!!!

Get a multi meter (Harbor Freight has a cheapo that should work) and look at your out put from your on-board charger. Check every inch of the wiring before you connect it to the battery or try to charge the battery. Bet there is a short somewhere. Wires can rub through where they go through walls or rub up against anything along there length.

Update...

I have a box to put the 7 way plug connections in. I also have fuses to put on the wires. There is obviously some damage from burning so I know I have to make sure the wires aren’t shorting out anywhere but not sure where to start. From the camper a harness comes out with 3 black wires and one white wire. Obviously the white is negative. I’m not sure where the 3 black wires would go. I’m sure one goes to the converter. Alternatively does the converter send the charge through a second or the same?

Email Jayco with model and serial number and they will send electric schematics. At least they did for me.

Depending on how it's wired, you can have the following wires going to the battery positive.

1) Converter
2) Charge Line from Vehicle
3) Electric Tongue Jack
4) Break Away Brakes

Some of these will go to the battery or they can have some going to the J-Box and only 1 or 2 going to the battery.

On my Jayco, I have 3 wires at the battery +
Electric Jack with fuse.
10ga black wire to J-Box
Wire to Break away switch

In the J-Box, the wire from the Bat+ splits and 1 side goes to a 30 amp resetable CB then to the converter. The other side of the split goes to a 30 amp ATO type fuse then to the charge line on the 7 way plug.

Wires

One was the main battery wire. One was a charging wire. The third I’ve not figured out yet. No electric jack. Also the breakaway switch does have a separate wire.
