Benefits of Cold Snap

Have been on the forum now for an hour or more and it struck me how many others are doing the same thing. Its almost like a chat room with quick responses and updates on the forum threads. Has been fun. Temp this am was 8 and now up to 18 but in for another cold nite here on the KY/TN border. Warmer weather in the 50's and even 60's in a few days. For now not a lot to do outside. Got all the Christmas stuff stowed. Got burned last year when I left the slides out on the White Hawk. Was cleaning and restocking before heading out on our Winter trip south. 2 days before departure we got buried under 12-14" of snow and sub freezing temps. Even when temps got above freezing 2 days later I still had about 8" of snow and ice on the slides. Took forever to clear them while being careful not to damage the membrane. A week after the storm and several days after our planned departure, drive was cleared of snow and ice AND 8 or 9 medium sized pines that had broken over the drive from the weight of the snow. While hooking up discovered the electric jack was frozen and had to thaw with a heat gun [it later died at the first campground].

This time everything got closed up and protected. Not leaving this time until Feb1 but could leave tomorrow if we wanted. Well not really since our 100 yard uphill gravel drive is covered with snow and ice. O well its fun just to sit and chat.

Yeah I have been surfing a few forums and facebook. Not too much else to do with a foot of snow on the ground and the wind howling. And so far the football games have been somewhat crappy.

Yes - rub it in please... I hear this a lot as our youngest daughter lives down your way. My old commuting bike has new life as I passed it on to her boyfriend who is using it to commute to/from his job a few miles away.

We just finished up a week or so in the low-mid 20's though not much snow - it's a balmy 40 and raining at the moment. I was pleasantly surprised the couple times I opened the side flap on the trailer cover and peeked in at the digital thermometer that it never dipped below about 34 degrees inside the trailer. So lots of forum surfing and trip planning while waiting for better weather....

Up to 30 here and sun ate up 80% of the snow. Hoping 2nd wildcard game is better. Nursing a cold I caught from DW so good time to lay low.

9 degrees outside right now. Our wood burning stove has been humming since Thursday. Looks like we will see warmer temps Tuesday again. I'm glad we don't have temps like this all the time, but I do enjoy an occasional cold snap (especially now that I don't work outside anymore)!!!

Supposed to hit zero here tonight. Something is definitely out of whack. This is North Carolina, not the North Pole.

Only benefit here is the dog poop freezes solid so it's easy to pick up, and all the bugs, mosquitoes, whatever are DEAD. I try to find the small benefits this time of year.

Rest of snow gone by noon today and opening up the slides to finish prepping for our trip at the end of the month. Restock and repack and reorganize.

That's hilarious and very true. Our daytime highs haven't been above 20 for the last 5 days and it's difficult to find anything positive about it. Relief is on the way though.

Our weather has been the worst roller coaster I've seen in a LONG time. Hard freeze, then two or three days later, record highs in the 80s. This is usually the kind of weather that makes me sick. Only good news is it's our busy season at work, so we're not going anywhere anyway. But it still seems to rain on the weekends anyway!

But I'm glad to have had some hard freezes this year as few as they are. Last winter was too mild, and the bugs didn't die. So the summer was just awful with bugs. My son is very sensitive to mosquito bites (2 YO) so it was pretty bad. We had to keep bug spray at every door and apply every time we went outside. Hopefully we get a couple more deep freezes to kill some more of them this year! I'd like to be able to go outside without the risk of getting hauled off by mosquitoes!!

I couldn't agree more with you. So far, the only one that's caught a cold is the DW. I'm just a bit north of you. We haven't had 80's yet this winter, but close. I got a reservation next month at Dinosaur State Park in Glen Rose. I'm hopeful for some decent weather!

Threads like this help remind why I live in such an expensive state. Low 60* days and High 40* nights. We do get the occasional cold snap, but nothing like I am reading on this thread.

I don't think CA is expensive because of the weather I'm sure it's a factor... population density and taxes and the infrastructure required to service everyone and a LARGE government presence are all bigger factors.

I'll leave it at that though... ( I grew up in the Bay Area FWIW)

I heard yesterday that of the 50 states, Florida is the only one without snow!
