Birmingham, AL to Elkhart, IN

Are there decent roads to take to Elkhart from Birmingham? Last year we went to northern OH via I65. I65 and I71 through Kentucky were a total nightmare. Some of the worst roads we have ever been on.

We read that the roads through Kentucky and in and out of IN are horrific. Is there a route that is not a nightmare?

Route planning now a days is like a crap shoot as far as road conditions. Left out of Huntsville on the 23rd. making our way up through South Dakota. Interstate I70 between St Louis and Kansas City is falling apart. I65 seems to be the best option.

Unless you want to go way out of the way or drive the back roads I 65 is your best bet. We actually just drove from Nashville to Indianapolis today and it wasn't too bad. We pulled the 5er from Indy to Bowling Green, KY back in early April and it's worse going south than north. Just south of Louisville is the worst area. I slowed it down to about 60 MPH and it helped a little.
