black tank chemical debate?

I've seen several posts on rv.net where users suggest not using chemicals in the black tank. I know there are environmental conscience campers that don't like the idea of sending chemicals to the treatment plant but what other reasons are there not to use them? I use them to mitigate the smell of the tank. Having spent a year in the sandbox with no running water, we relied on port-a-potties and I can't imagine the smell of one that didn't have chemicals in the tank. Thoughts?

I use them for odor control as well as to help break down the solids

People here will tell you to use nothing, use only their home brewed recipe, use non-toxic or use whatever.
You will similarly get lots of comments about what disasters will befall you or others by using nothing, or using chemicals or whatever. We do mostly State Park camping, and I've yet to see any signs at the dump station that say you can't dump your BW here if you use XX product in your tank.
It is your travel trailer. Use what you feel comfortable with.

If I didn't use the chemicals, I'd have to sleep outside.....

Did the same in Iraq before the fancy chemical toilets got there.

RID-X is now making a RV treatment available on line and at least at Wal-Mart which is only enzymes and deodorizer.

It was a crappy job ! A friend of mine uses this in his MOTORHOME and the bathroom has a fresh baby powder smell . Has no formaldehyde . I picked up one myself at the Rv show couple weeks ago. I have camped close to people that don't use anything and in warm weather it's bad Click image for larger version
