Breakaway issue

Hello everyone. Had a mishap on the highway in Washington the other day. Debris on the road flew up and caught the breakaway cable thus pulling out the pin and of course doing it's job by engaging the trailer brakes. We put the pin back in and all seemed fine and the brakes were working.However now at camp with full electric and the trailer batteries are not charging. Does anyone here have any insight? Is it a converter issue? Hoping to have a mobile mechanic come by on Monday.

One quick thing to check would be the master battery fuse. Follow the positive wire, it will be close to the battery.

Glad the road debris didn't cause any real damage... like shredding a tire!

Do you have a voltmeter? How do you know the batteries are not charging?

Is this a new trailer and your first time out with it or ???

If the fuse is good you can check the converter by disconnect the battery wires (both positive and negative) and check the voltage across the wires placing one probe on the positive and one on the negative. You should be about 13.6V coming from the converter.

I suspect the debris damaged a wire on the A-frame. I would first look at the ground wire, as it is connected to the frame near the battery. Next I would check the fuse at the battery. Then inspect the wires from the battery into the TT. On many TTs, there is a junction box at the front of the TT, where the 7 pin wire harness terminates to the individual wires to each device. Check each connection.

Yes our trailer is a 2017 24rbs but not our first time out. This is our second summer and first problem. We are going to buy a voltmeter today and check all the connections as suggested p. Thanks!

Is that the same 30 amp fuse that operates the tongue jack? We did have to replace that last year so I know where that is.

No, not normally. The 30 amp fuse will be by the box mounted the the front cross member. Follow the wires and the big 7 pin connector cord to the front crossmember and there should be a 4" x 4" electrical junction box there. The fuse is normally near that box and has a rubber cover over it.

FYI we newbies discovered that the 2-40 amp fuses in the main fuse panel were toast! Must have taken the brunt of the power surge that occurred when the TT brakes were activated so suddenly. Phew! We are celebrating the fact that it was an easy fix. Thank you so much for all of your input.

Good deal. I'm glad you fixed it. You really need to locate the other fuses we're talking about and have spares and know where they are.
